Gustav Holst (Cheltenham, 1874 - London, 1934) was of the very first great British composers of classical music to write some valuable original compositions for symphonic band. Holst composed operas, choral works and splendid compositions for symphony orchestra. He got famous with his opus 32, the seven part suite "The Planets" composed between 1914 and 1917. The first complete public performance was given in 1920. The first part, "Mars, the war bringer" was written just before the outburst of the First World War. Geert Schrijvers wrote this fine arrangement for symphonic band, organ and two harps.

This short, "cool" suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane, which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat. The Pirates are comming! is a four movement suite of music originally composed for a summer course arranged by The Norwegian Band Federation. The four movments describes the pirates tale. In the first movement they set the sails for new adventures. In the second movememt we meet the pirates early one morning when the sun rises. I the third movememt the pirates are looking for a treasure map at the Isle of the Dead. In the fourth and last movememt, they hunt the teasure! The Composer has been inspired by TV-series and films with pirate themes. The Music is written especially for beginners.

£194.99Euphonium Concerto II - Philip Sparke
The original concept for this work was a suite of short movements, each with its own character, but by the time the first movement was complete it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores the unsurpassable ability of the euphonium to play lyrically, with a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bebop in style and shows off the jazzier capabilities of the euphonium. The concerto was composed for the virtuoso soloist,Steven Mead. A version for euphonium and piano is also available.

£244.99Les Voyages de Gulliver - Maxime Aulio
Maxime Aulio composed Les Voyages de Gulliver (Gulliver's Travels) for the concert band of the Conservatoire National de Rgion in Toulouse (France) conducted by Jean-Guy Olive. The first performance took place in Toulouse (Auditorium Saint-Pierre des Cuisines) on April 25, 2001. The Anglo-Irish author Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) took about six years to complete his epic tale of adventure. The creative storyline, clear writing and subtlety of Gulliver's Travels have been engaging readers for generations. This literary travel between reason and foolishness was Maxime Aulio's inspiration for this piece. Each of the four movements of this suite is a review of Gulliver'sadventures, resembling the effect of a kaleidoscope, which juxtaposes small fragments of colour in a linear pattern.

Frank Bridge was one of the finest English composers of the first half of the 20th century. The Pageant of London is his only work for wind band, comprising of two marches, one scored from Bridge's best known organ piece and including the chimes ofBig Ben, plus three short renaissance pastiche items, one arranged from Playford (later used by Peter Warlock in Capriol Suite). The music is tuneful, approachable and, in the words of wind band 'legend' Timothy Reynish makes a fine alternative toHolst's two suites, which were composed around the same time. Reynish has introduced this work to concert bands right across the world. It has been performed in USA and the Far East, recorded by the celebrated Kosei Wind Orchestra of Japan and alsoby the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the Chandos edition of Bridge Orchestral Music.
