In 2014, Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN (Japan) celebrated its fifteenth anniversary for which this work was composed. From the very beginning, Yoshihoro Kimura has been the artistic leader of the ensemble. Jan Van der Roost became the band's first guest conductor in 2013. In this spectacular work the composer looks back at one of his most famous earlier works 'Apollo', and to Adolphe Sax, the Belgian inventor of the saxophone.

Few composers have had such an impact on Swedish music life as Tor Aulin (1866 1914). He studied violin and music theory in Stockholm 1877 83, and in Berlin 1884 86. In 1887 he founded the Aulin Quartet, which for more than 20 years played animportant role in broadening Swedish interest in chamber music. The quartet was often on tour with the composer Wilhelm Stenhammar at the piano.1889 1902 Aulin was the leader of the orchestra at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.At Aulinsinstigation the Concert Association in Stockholm (later The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) was founded in 1902, and he was its conductor until 1909. From then on he was the conductor of the Gothenburg ConcertAssociation (nowadays The GothenburgSymphony Orchestra).Besides being a first class violinist, Tor Aulin was also an accomplished pianist, and Edvard Grieg was deeply impressed by Aulin's rendering of his piano concerto.Aulins list of works is dominated by his musicfor violin. He wrote three violin concertos, the third of which still has a place in the repertoire.Four Aquarelles for violin and piano from 1899 is his most beloved composition. In 1996 Jerker Johansson arranged this work for soloinstruments, one for each of the four movements, and concert band. The solo instruments being clarinet, trumpet, flute and alto saxophone.

Cerebral Vortex was composed for Musikkforeningen Nidarholm for their participation in the 2009 World Music Contest in Kerkrade, The Netherlands. Tthe first performance was given at this contest conducted by Espen Andersen, with the composer in thesaxophone section.The title is meant to describe a from of writer's block caused not by lack of ideas, but rather a lack of ability to channel and form the madness swirling around inside the head of someone with a great desire to express something. In this respect,the piece can be said to be an exercise in keeping focus from the composer's side. A limited amount of material is repeated and treated to create a development that always has a solid anchor point. This is emphasized by the return to the openingtheme towards the end.

Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempo concert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says,"Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to." "Amalies Christmas" is a Norwegian TV series for children, produced by NRK in 1995, and broadcasted again in 19976, and in 2000.The program consisted of 24 episodes, and follows Amalie Wang (Anne Marie Ottesen) making preperations forChristmas in an old house where there lived goblins. The program was the first of many to follow, based on the author Gudny I. Hagens characters. The music is composed by Philip A. Kruse, and all episodes ended with the goblin family (HaraldHeide-Steen jr., Brit Elisabeth Haagensli og Pia Borgli) singing "Lullaby for small goblins".This arrangement for young concert band may be performed with different instrumental soloist or vocalist.Chords are included for piano/guitar. It isimportant to focus on the dynamics and the tempo. The soloist must be heard clearly and adding a choir in the refrains makes it even nicer. It is a melodic song that suits being performed in churches and rooms with ambience. The song is often usedaround Christmas time, but it is written as a small lullaby that can be played anytime.

This march was commissioned by The office of cultural affairs in Fana and Ytrebygda (a part of Bergen Municipality) for the opening of The Bergen Light Rail. The premiere was given by The Norwegian Navy Band Bergen and Smrs skolemusikkduring the light rails maiden voyage. Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway opened the light rail on June 22nd 2010.My ida was to give the march a strong link to Bergen. In the bass solo (letter B) I have quoted Bergens "national"anthem Nystemtn and in the Trio (letter E) I have used a bugle call from Bergens unique tradition of archerchery brigades. The first part of the march is meant to have a sort of train feel to it; somethingthats moving steadily through thestreets of the city.

I came to know of this piece when hearing famous Norwegian ragtime pianist Morten Gunnar Larsen playing it at a concert with the Norwegian Navy Band Bergen.I was struck by its melancholic beauty and wanted to arrange it for band. Ragtimes are rarely in a minor key (which this one is) and when you first hear it, you might think it was written around the time when Scott Joplin was the main ragtime composer. But, if you listen more carefully, you notice that some of the harmoniesare more advanced than one might expect in traditional ragtime, giving the piece a slightly more contemporary feel. The composer William Bolcom wrote Graceful Ghost in 1970 to honour the memoryof his father and it is one of his mostpopular pieces.

The Imperial Royal State Railways was the first rail company in the Austro-Hungarian empire. Imperial Overture tells the tale of a tourist who visits Austria and travels by rail across Austria. During his journey, the train passes through the Vienna Woods and the beautiful scenery of Lower and Upper Austria, stopping for a short while in Wels before reaching Salzburg, Mozart's home town.
