£105.00Battles - Simon Dobson
Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands, and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. The work presents eight contrasting scenes as a continuous sequence: War, Introduction of Admiral von Spee, German Banquet, Building Steam/Preparing, Islanders, Call to Arms, Great Battle at Sea and Victory. The original score was written for a small chamber orchestra, symphonic brass and a substantial batterie of tuned and untuned percussion. Battles has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp.Composer Simon Dobson says of hiscolourful score, "I wanted to keep things simple and clear, so there is a British theme, a fanfare march idea, often heard on trumpet, and a German naval theme, which is a more angular motif."

This work was commissioned by two fanfare bands from Loksbergen and Kortenaken in Belgium, that have merged to form one single ensemble. This festive work has been constructed using two contrasting elements: a rhythmic, fast theme full of character, combined with a melodic, sensitive and slow theme. The title refers to the enthusiastic, fiery character of the opening passage, the fast section, and the renewed passion and drive that has been created due to the merging of the two bands.

Citadel was composed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of The University of Kansas (1865 to 2015.) It begins with optional offstage chimes (one or two sets [opt.]) to depict the daily ringing of the bells in KU's World War II Memorial Campanile. Trumpets introduce a fanfare-like figure that quickly evolves into the opening theme of the work. As the music settles and becomes softer, a saxophone choir introduces a slower, more pensive middle theme intended to describe the university's academic nature. A quiet moment at the end of this section hints at the famous Rock Chalk Chant in solo horn before the chimes and fanfare return to end the work in a final, dramatic outburst of sound and color.

Constructed between 1915 and 1928, the Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41) provides over 260 miles of scenic Florida beauty between Tampa and Miami. On the Tamiami Trail reflects on this journey, and pays tribute to the Suncoast Concert Band of Sarasota (along the trail) and its director emeritus, Leo Laier. The opening fanfare sets the mood and leads to the energetic first theme. Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare 'Prins Hendrik', from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein' Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern concert bandrepertoire.
