This celebrated song is based on a poem by Julie Hausmann (1826-1901), a Latvian teacher who was probably blind. The text draws on her personal experience and unshakeable faith in God, death and eternal life. The melody by Friedrich Silcher is written in a simple and delicate style but also draws on the grand romantic tradition of Wagner and Bruckner. Commissioned by the Military Wives Choirs to commemorate the centenary of 1918, the end of the First World War. The Military Band Accompaniment is available separately - NOV167387To mark the centenary of the end of World War I, the Military Wives Choirs - 69 choirs from across Britain and abroad - commissioned Owain to write a piece for their album, 'Remember'. The text for Owain's work, 'The Poppy Red', is inspired by the 1918 poem 'We Shall Keep The Faith' by Moina Michael, itself inspired by John McCrae's 'In Flanders Fields'. The recording brought together 1105 voices with The Band of the Household Cavalry, conducted by Hilary Davan Wetton.

Distant Hymns is the third movement from the composer's work Dreams and Faith (The Solomon Valley Anthology). The American Composers Alliance commissioned the work for their Continental Harmony Project. In the late 1880s and early 1900s, many of the inhabitants of the Solomon River area in northern Kansas meticulously documented their lives in the vast expanse of the Kansas prairie in writings in their personal diaries. Several writers recorded an unusual phenomenon where the wind often carried sounds over the open prairie and fields with no visible sound source. An example of this display was sometimes the presence of music, often church hymns, carried with the wind from assumed distant churches that were frequently not there. The melodies could be heard constantly changing in volume and sound as the winds continuously changed directions. Distant Hymns is a musical representation of this experience, where a simple hymn tune is handed to and integrated between different groups of instruments. Ebbing frequently, the music varies in loudness and softness as the melody moves freely upon the wind.

"In Flanders Fields" is a play recounting the Battle of Vimy Ridge (France) which took place from April 9 to 12, 1917. The introduction refers to the thousands of graves found at the site of Notre-Dame de Lorette. Then begins the episode of preparation and fierce battle. Thanks to the Canadian Expeditionary Force that came as reinforcements, the battle was won and the site secured at 6 a.m. (brass choir accompanied by 6 bells). This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first 'Cry for Freedom' it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement 'Dream of Freedom' takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale 'Freedom Above All' refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. This movement should be seen first and foremost as an affirmation of life, faith and hope for a better world.

This work was inspired by the 3rd/4th century legend of Margaret of Antioch. Margaret was very devout, and lived as a shepherdess in the countryside. When the city prefect Olybrius proposed to her, on the condition that she would give up her faith, she refused and was eventually put to death. To evoke the archaic early-medieval atmosphere, Bert Appermont has used two Gregorian Kyries. In addition, influences from old music (such as old modes and parallel fifths) and Carl Orff's work are present. This four movement piece is an epic symphonic poem-like work with an incredible expressiveness and is ideal for a thematic concert or a contest.
