Extra Score. The Peninsula marches were written for the Coldstream Guards Band in celebration of two great battles the regiment was involved in and fought in Spain in the early 19th Century. Extra Score only. The fundamental expression of this Scherzo is one of joyful energy. In form, it is a developed rondo, comprising three statements of the main theme (or rather of the main group of themes) and two episodes, together with an introduction, bridge passages and a coda. In each of the three statements of the main group of themes one particular theme appears at the climax, and from it the melodic and rhythmic motifs of the work are all derived. This basic theme is an African melody that has been sung since 1852 by people of African descent in Guiana, South America, in celebration of the abolition of slavery there in that year. Extra score only. The Scottish Dance Suite is based on traditional Scottish folk songs and dances, though several less well-known tunes are used. For instance in the second of the four movements, one can hear the older tune of The bonnie Earl of Moray, and in the first movement, the tune is the one to which Burns wrote his famous poem Robin shure in hairst. In the last movement, two well-known tunes alternate, but at the end several of the tunes used in the work all combine together to make an exciting climax. Duration: 8mins.

From Malcolm Arnold's first film score for the director, David Lean, written for the movie, The Sound Barrier which was the story of jet planes and their attempts to fly faster than sound. This is the music of the wide-open spaces of the sky; of the ecstasy of flying; of the sense of loss and waste when accidents happen; and finally of man's aspirations and elation at subduing yet another particle of the universe. SPECTRUM (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Vinter, Gilbert - Newton, Rodney
Extra Score. SPECTRUM. This work caused much consternation when it was used as the brass band test piece at the 1969 British Open Competition. The score is an uncompromising one and as colourful as its title suggests. The various episodes of the work are each named after a colour from the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Purple (changed from Violet when Vinter became conscious of his failing health). It is a piece of violent mood swings challenging all sections of the band. Many consider this to be the finest of Vinter's small output for band.
