Suite Pastorale, made up of three movements - Idyll, Playful Shepherd Boys, Rain Upon the Fields - is characterized by an idealization of the simplicity of country life in close contact with nature. Suite Pastorale depicts the eternal and fascinating myth of Arcadia: a world in which man lives in harmony with nature, immersed in bucolic forest landscapes, one of the most important imaginary places to escape to for those who were, and still are, tired of culture and civilization. The evocative Arcadian world is made almost mythological by the attention dedicated to it by poets, writers, playwrights, painters, and composers who over the centuries have drawn lifeblood from it for their works. Full of metaphorical meanings, it is a place of shelter, a place to live and sing about love, even if it means disappointment, and it is the place of civilization opposed to barbarism. It is a symbol of happiness, a real and intact image of reality, motionless in space and time, where nothing changes. This work was commissioned by Marktmusik Timelkam to celebrate its 170th anniversary. It describes the cultural life and hustle and bustle of the band's home base, the Austrian town of Timelkam. Carnival pictures a festive procession starting at the marketplace and lasting well into the night. The work features many 'carnivalesque' elements and is a joy for players to perform. There is a lot of merry activity going on in the music; people cheerily chatting in the inn; singing and dancing together and having fun. There is also room for a melancholy mood, accompanied by reminiscences about eternal goodbyes and searching for love. With the added musical representation of children's playing and pranks, a beautiful sunrise as well as a depiction of the churches and societies in town, this composition is not just an account of a carnival parade but a small portrayal of life.

This work pays tribute to Jean-Marie Goux, the band's former musical director, who had forged strong links with Hungary: whether in the village of Tarjn or Budapest itself, he had shared his zest for life with the Hungarian people. This colourful work consists of three movements: 'The 7th Tribe', 'Eternal Fidelty' and 'Conquest of the Homeland'. It offers not only strong musical content, but also historical insight about a beautiful region with a great tradition.

Send in the Clowns is one of the most well known songs written by composer Stephen Sondheim. The ironic lyrics have a present-day meaning. It was recorded by the likes of Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Between them all, they brought this song eternal fame. The Norwegian arranger, Richard Johnsen, who is very familiar with this musical repertoire, made this beautiful arrangement and kept it very close to the sound of the original version.

This arrangement was made for The Suoni Wind Orchestra of Skien, Norway, and performed for the first time at their Promenade Concert "At Sea" at the Ibsen Culture Center, March 8th 2014, being the final number of the concert. Participating this concert was also the Choir Canto Libre and the two vocal soloists were Eli Kristin Hansveen and Andreas Hoff. Since that time this arrangement has been used also at other concerts involving choir and soloists. It is important that tempo is not too slow and one has to be thorough with details in the percussion parts. The richness of the music of the sub-contient is an eternal inspiration, showing music to be the fusion and balance of opposites: improvisation and calculation, freedom and form, rhythm and melody.Indian musical thinking has acted through thecenturies as a model for articulating thought through sound.I have based my piece on an Indian temple dance in which a short motivic nugget generates garlands and trails of sonic colour.The raga-form is maintained, with anintruduction comprizing a presentation of the scale-material, out of which the sonic nugget is forged.The work was premiered by The Norwegian Navy Band Bergen conducted by Peter Szilvay in 2007.This newversion was edited by thecomposer in 2015.

Leviathan - Franco Cesarini
The leviathan, a demoniacal sea monster that appears as a dragon or serpent, is considered in the Old Testament to be the embodiment of evil. The defeat of the demon is prophesied in Isaiah 27:1: "On that day the Lord will punish with his cruel sword, his mighty and powerful sword Leviathan that primeval sea-serpent, that writhing serpent Leviathan, and slay the monster of the deep ."The composer's main goal is to create an atmosphere thick with agitation, tumult and extreme tension rather than express specific events musically. The monstrous form of the leviathan slowly emerges from the abyss of primordial sounds at the start of the piece, recalling the eternal conflict betweengood and evil.

A graceful choral then captures the magnificent setting of the Mayan world. After a folk melody for the populace, the agitated scene of a sacrificial ceremony is portrayed. The regal theme appears again in the coda, concluding in brilliance. This great civilization vanished in 10 A.D., leaving only remnants of a remarkably prosperous world. Thousands of ruins large and small remain locked in a dense world of jungle, with huge crumbled cities having lain forgotten for eight centuries.II. Glorious ruins still ariseII characterizes this civilization from glory, to destruction, to the present with its buried ruins. To begin, stone cities wait silently cloaked in jungle, steadfastly eluding discovery. As time passes slowly, the music reflects back to the glory of the Maya. Though wishing to turn back the hands of time for this incredible civilization, its fate and the gravity of its loss are carried forward in the profound silence of eternal loss. Finally, in the present, we marvel at the thousands of elegant remains, with a choral of praise for those with remarkable wisdom and strength, in a spectacular conclusion.(Satoshi Yagisawa)
