In this celebratory extended fanfare, composer James Curnow skillfully weaves this majestic melody into a work which is both exuberant and energetic. Recorded by the Cobb Wind Symphony (Marietta, GA) -Alfred Watkins and Robert Cowles conductors, premiered during their performance at the 2018 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. The source of inspiration for this work was the play Das Kthchen von Heilbronn (Katie of Heilbronn), which was written by Heinrich von Kleist in 1810. The music evokes the underlying drama, tensions and emotions of the characters involved: "The Blacksmith's Daughter", "Kunigunde", "The Fire" and "The Emperor's Daughter". The title 'Battle of Hearts' refers to the two women from the story (Kthchen and Kunigunde), who both fight to win the heart of Count Von Strahl. This is an impressive, non programmatic but strong thematic work suitable for concerts or contests. This work was commissioned by Blserjugend Kreisverband Heilbronn.

This original work was inspired by the "spirit army" of 6,000 clay statues created in the third century B.C. for the tomb of the first emperor of China. This suite is based on the musical In the Shadow of Napoleon which celebrated its exceptionally successful premire in Worms, Germany, on 21 July 2014. The musical tells the story of Louis-Joseph Marchand, Napoleon's footman who is involved in the dispute over the emperor's inheritance and the unsolved mystery of his death. The composer strove to present the six musical songs in the suite in such a way that it appears to be an entirely new work.
