The Terracotta army that guards the tomb of China's first emperor Qin Shi Huang is nearly 8,000 warriors strong. This new piece for beginning ensembles is set to depict these magnificent stone soldiers. New composer Tyler Arcari draws on his background in music education to bring us a stunning new piece that young band students will love to play. It will sound rich and full, even with less experienced players. In addition to the wonderful music in this piece, there are great opportunities for cross-curricular learning with this contest worthy piece.

Franz Joseph Haydn's famous melody from the second movement of the Emperor Quartet (String Quartet, Op. 76) was the basis for the national anthem of Austria for more than a century, and is frequently heard in hymns, anthems, andalma maters worldwide. In this celebratory extended fanfare, composer James Curnow skillfully weaves this majestic melody into a work which is both exuberant and energetic. Recorded by the Cobb Wind Symphony (Marietta, GA) -Alfred Watkins and Robert Cowles conductors, premiered during their performance at the 2018 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. The source of inspiration for this work was the play Das Kthchen von Heilbronn (Katie of Heilbronn), which was written by Heinrich von Kleist in 1810. The music evokes the underlying drama, tensions and emotions of the characters involved: "The Blacksmith's Daughter", "Kunigunde", "The Fire" and "The Emperor's Daughter". The title 'Battle of Hearts' refers to the two women from the story (Kthchen and Kunigunde), who both fight to win the heart of Count Von Strahl. This is an impressive, non programmatic but strong thematic work suitable for concerts or contests. This work was commissioned by Blserjugend Kreisverband Heilbronn.

This original work was inspired by the "spirit army" of 6,000 clay statues created in the third century B.C. for the tomb of the first emperor of China. A brief, plaintive folk chant summons the army from their centuries-old sleep. The warriors respond, with musical representations of uniform marching and weapons display. (4:25)

In the 1950 motion picture "Quo Vadis" starring Robert Taylor and Peter Ustinov still is one of the greatest movies in the history. The music was composed by Miklos Rosza. The "Hail Nero - Triumphal March" beautifully arranged by Steven Verhaert gives an impression of the greatness of the Roman empire in the days of Emperor Nero.

Giacomo da Lentini was a 13th century Italian poet who was a notary at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II and is said to have invented the sonnet. Lentini's Ballad is based on the famous poem 'Amor un desio che ven da core' (Love is a desire that comes from the heart). It sounds great as an instrumental work, but there is also an option for a vocal version using the Italian lyrics of the poem, making the arrangement even more special!
