Fantasia on a Flemish Sea Song (CB) - Simon Van Hoecke
'Fantasia on a Flemish Sea Song' was commissioned by Jeroen Berwaerts and VLAMO for the gala concert of the European Brass Band Championships 2017. These took place in the Belgian seaside town of Ostend, which explains the choice to make a fantasy on the sailor's song "Al die willen te kap'ren varen". A first reference to the song can be found in a Ghent song collection from 1856 by E. de Coussemaker: "Chants populaires des Flamands de France". The fantasia is faithful to tradition composed in a free form with variation elements and allows the soloist to showcase virtuosity and narrative power.

Matthew Putnam'sWolverine Trailis a concert march for beginning bands and is perfect for introducing beginners to the march form and style. This piece is based in the key of E flat major and uses only the first seven notes taught in most method books. It is also rhythmically accessible to beginners, with eighth-note combinations being the most difficult rhythms. This piece follows standard march form except that is does not modulate at the trio section.

This is the perfect song for teaching 6/8 time. It is all very easy with eighth notes in groups of 3 only. No quarter/eighth rhythms, so it is easy to get the students to feel the triple meter. It is also a great song for getting the first clarinet players to play over the break. For the 1st half of the song, they play low notes. From low A, they press the register key and get the E in the staff, thus making it easy and fun to play the higher notes. It is an exciting work and one of NMP's best sellers. The first trumpet's highest note is C.

The woodwind parts are especially intriguing, with much more variety and independence than is frequently found in a traditional march. Fillmore wrote this march to honor the leadership of famed band leader and cornet soloist Frank Simon. It is authentically presented here as Fillmore intended, carefully edited by Robert E. Foster.

Kinetic energy is defined as the energy of constant motion. Larry Clark represents this idea with a near constant 8th-note pulse throughout his supercharged piece. Though the piece ends in B flat major, the main idea is in the Lydian mode on E flat. Kinetic Energy is Clark at his most incisive and the scoring is apt and colorful.

Written for the University of Florida band, this piece was actually dedicated to all Floridians. Fillmore was known throughout Florida as "Uncle Henry" and he was instrumental in the development of band programs throughout the state. A great tune!
