This collection of folk songs was inspired by the musicologist Cecil Sharpe and his journeys through the Appalachian Mountain range in the early 1900s. Mr. Sharpe collected traditional British folk songs that had been passed down from generation to generation in this culturally rich area of the United States. Short, tight movements, each with their own unique musical identity, lead to an exciting reel as the conclusion. A significant addition to the concert band repertoire suitable for programming at any concert or festival performance.

Perfect Trip derives its title from the horse racing term which refers to the flawless performance of a winning steed. It was written for the 20th anniversary concert of the Ridgewood Concert Band in New Jerseyat the request of the band's founding director, Dr. C. Christian Wilhjelm. The piece itself lasts not much more than a typical one mile horse race and depicts the event from the observer's perspective: the initial burst of energyat the starting gate and the ensuing excitement approaching the first turn, the suspense as the race develops along the far stretch, and the increasing drama as the pack rounds the final turn and heads down the stretch for the bigfinish. Recorded by the Ridgewood Concert Band, Christian Wilhjelm, conductor. (Grade 4)

A sirocco is a Mediterranean wind that originates in the Sahara Desert, capable of reaching hurricane velocities. This piece reflects the changing nature of this dry wind; it starts with a brief and violent flurry, then settles down, depicting the still, hot desert morning. As the desert comes to life, the music evolves into a 6/8 world-music groove, enhanced by colorful percussion effects. Building and growing in intensity, the raging sandstorm powers over the landscape to a climactic close.

Tales & Legends - Etienne Crausaz
This three-movement work by the Swiss composer Etienne Crausaz reflects three true stories and fascinating legends from the Middle Ages. The first movement tells the dramatic story of the 'witch' Catherine 'Catillon' Repond (1662-1731). She was the last woman ever to be executed for sorcery. In the second movement, the famous court jester Girard Chalamala occupies centre stage. This jester, the last one at the castle of Count Greyerz, could make everyone laugh. The third movement tells the story of Count Michael. He went down in history as a spendthrift bon-vivant. His burden of debt became so high that he did a moonlight flit and never came back!

Doss drew the inspiration for this fanfare from a mountain hike in the Salzkammergut. A powerful fanfare reveals enthusiasm and triumph. Nar himmelen faller ned (When the sky falls down) is the most famous song by Norwegian singer/songwriter Anne Grete Preus (1957-2019). It was released as single record in 1998 and included on the "Best of" collection "Mosaikk - 16 biter" later the same year. The song was also one of her very first hits as a solo artist. Her great career included many prestigious awards. Most notably are the "Spellemannsprisen" (the Norwegian Grammy) which she won several times. This arrangement was originally written for Preus herself as vocal soloist with Concert Band. In this reworked version, the vocal solo part can be omitted as the melody is spread out in the various band parts. Duration: 4.15
