Two Preludes by Giuseppe Verdi - Giuseppe Verdi

In his compositional craft, Verdi was not reluctant to display some of his most powerful and dramatic music in his overtures, preludes and ballet scenes. His preludes before individual acts of the operas were shorter than his overtures, but they do foreshadow the mood and intense drama of the ensuing scenes. Paired together in this transcription are preludes from Ernani and Atilla, his fifth and ninth of 26 operatic works.

Letters from the Battlefield - Barry E. Kopetz

Letters from the Battlefield was commissioned by the Land of Grant Honor Band to commemorate the end of the American Civil War. The collected letters of U.S. Grant reveal much information about the thoughts and emotions he was experiencing around the events of the Civil War. Some of the letters are tenderhearted, written in moments of sentimental passion; others are very clear and emphatic statements that he will do whatever it takes to bring the war to a close. The many moods and emotions expressed in his correspondence are reflected in the various sections of this powerful and moving work. An outstanding concert work, it is also appropriate for Civil War or patriotic commemorative ceremonies.

    Ambassador - Larry Clark

This is a very easy march using only the first six notes students learn in all band method books. It is intended to teach students march form, but remains tuneful and exciting just like the more challenging marches. How does Larry Clark do it year after year!

    Diagram - André Waignein

The story of the origin of Diagram for Symphonic Band is a curious one. Andr Waignein was enjoying a meal together with his great friend Jean-Marie Vivier - representative director of l'Oreal Belgilux and the same man who made the performance of the famous Cantate aux Etoiles, with 750 performers possible. Jean Plaquet, an appreciated associate of both gentlemen was also present. As an acknowledgement, Andr Waignein wanted to dedicate a composition to the band where Mr. Vivier has been chairman for 20 years. In connection with this, Andr Waignein was supposed to receive some extra information about the 120 years old history of this band, which has always been led by a memberof the Vivier family. In a flash this history was presented : using a diagram Mr. Vivier drew the power-lines of this more than 100 year old band. And of course, the title was found ! The only thing left to do, was for Andr Waignein to transform this diagram into music.

A Taste of Honey - Bobby Scott

Ever heard of Tijuana Taxi, Spanish Flea or A Taste of Honey? Even if these names do not ring a bell, everyone has certainly hummed along when hearing these pieces on the radio. These titles were made famous in the 1960s by the trumpeter Herb Alpert and his band Tijuana Brass and are still extremely popular today. This arrangement is full of surprises with exciting fragments, sparkling and catchy passages and colourful instrumentations. A part for electric guitar intensifies the swinging feeling of the piece, but is not obligatory. This arrangement will definitely get the audience in a party mood.

Spirit of the Sequoia - Philip Sparke

When Philip Sparke composed this piece he tried to create a work that characterised man's ability to overcome personal tragedy and the feeling of serenity gained when the tragedy is forgotten. To do this he decided to use the analogy of the sequoia, a generic name for the huge redwood trees, particularly the Californian redwood. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground which require heat, such as a ferocious forest fire to re-grow. In a similar way, the human spirit can actually gain from setbacks - we become stronger after adversity. The music falls into sections which can broadly be characterised as doubt, conflict, catharsis, inner calm and finally triumph. A fantasic new major concert work from the pen of Philip Sparke.

The Painted Desert - Philip Sparke

The south-western US state of Arizona has more than its fair share of stunning landscapes, natural phenomena and National Monuments. Best known is the Grand Canyon, but there are also numerous deserts, a petrified forest, extinct volcanoes and the huge Sunset Crater. Not surprisingly, it has featured as the backdrop to many Western movies. The Painted Desert is a narrow, crescent-shaped arc about 160 miles long which begins near the Grand Canyon and varies in width from 10 to 35 miles. It is largely void of vegetation and years of erosion by wind and rain have exposed sedimentary layers of rock up to 250 million years old. Chemical differences in the various layers result in aneffect not unlike a multicoloured layer cake with contrasting hues of red, orange and pink, blue, grey and lavender creating a silent and barren landscape which looks like it has been hand-painted. As with much of the planet's stunning landscapes all the observer can do is stand and stare.
