An addition to the composer's series of folk music inspired pieces, has the slightly condescending title "Dead End". The piece is a funeral march and so also written for an occasion, where this style of music was a natural inspiration. It is built on a drum ostinato, which is followed by a melody in Norwegian folk music style. The repetitions in the melody line and rhythm, create a hypnotic effect, leaving us in a special state of mind, alternating between deep sorrow, bottomless despair and grateful gratitude. The piece has proven to be effective, both as a concert opener and as the last piece in a concert. Duration: 6.10

John Rutter's Requiem is a musical setting of parts of the Latin Requiem with added psalms and biblical verses in English, completed in 1985. This arrangement is scored for soprano, mixed choir and Concert/Wind Band. It may be performed by band alone. Five of its seven movements are based on text from the Latin Requiem Mass, while the second movement is a setting of Out of the deep (Psalm 130) and the sixth movement is an anthem The Lord is my Shepherd (Psalm 23) which Rutter had earlier written. The cello solo of the second movement is maintained, but also scored as a bassoon solo. The first movement combines the Introit and Kyrie, the third is Pie Jesu, with soprano solo. The central movement is a lively Sanctus, followed by Agnus Dei and finally Lux aeterna. In the Agnus Dei and Lux aeterna, Rutter combines the liturgical Latin text with English biblical verses. The arranger has added the tolling of the bell at the end, which can be as few or as many as may be appropriate for the occasion.

This piece was written for the Nottingham Wind Ensemble to celebrate 30 years of music making. The piece describes a party or celebration deep in Sherwood Forest with the legendary Robin Hood, Maid Marian and the Merry Men. The word "Merry" in those days meant following an outlaw or a leader rather than the way we use it today. The music invites us into the forest with a gentle modal oboe solo which is joined by other instruments as it proceeds to the party. Various melodic episodes introduce elements of folk and dance music from the whole of the British Isles before the music concludes with a recapitulation of the opening bars. The score is written in such a way as to allow bands with fewer resources to play the piece successfully, whilst ensuring a full wind orchestra orchestration is included. Duration: 4.00

The work Prevision has been composed in a free fantasy form. Deep in thought the composer sketches his prevision - the development of his small grandson growing up to be an adult. After a brilliant introduction, a slow march follows, which symbolises the first steps toward adulthood. Aspects such as love and a sense of security, that are indispensable for a positive development, are presented in a calm middle section, after which an energetic closing part refers to the rebelliousness of an adolescent. The grand finale of Prevision expresses the grandfather's and composer's positive picture of the future. 0:10:30
