Based on Alexander Dumas' adaptation of E. T. A. Hoffman's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, the ballet premiered in December of 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Tchaikovsky selected eight pieces from the ballet and created The Nutcracker Suite, which became an immediate success and to this day remains one of the most popular ballets, and contains some of the best-loved Christmas music. This suite of three selected short movements scored especially for beginners includes March, Dance of the Reed Flutes, and Russian Dance (Trepak). HENK VAN LIJNSCHOOTEN (Den Haag 1928) does not need any introduction. He is one of the pioneers of modern wind band music in The Netherlands and has a worldwide reputation as conductor, teacher and composer. From 1957 to 1964 he was director of the famous Marine Band of the Royal Dutch Marine. It was for the 1960 Delft Tattoo that he made this arrangement of the well-known British sailor's song Hornpipe, named after the typical celtic wooden wind instrument (originally made of cow horns in Wales). The Dutch dance 'horlepiep' refers to the same song and dance.

We start our trip in Wallony, the French speaking part of Belgium where folk music is having a big revival nowadays. A solo cornet invites us with a classic opening as a little promenade to the dance, always accompanied by a tenor drum. Some instruments join but the cornet ends up alone. When the euphoniums present their more up tempo 'quasi Celtic jig' all groups dance together towards the end. Now and then syncopated counterrhytms occur in accompanying parts.The 1st theme is from the manuscript of Franois-Joseph Jamin (early 19th century).

Greek folk music is characterised by the sound of the 'buzuki' which is often used in combination with the clarinet, the mandolin, the violin and various types of tambourines. In Greek Folk Song Suite, Franco Cesarini has elaborated on three songs belonging to this most ancient tradition. The first, O Haralambis, is in 7/8 time, a characteristic of a popular folk dance called kalamatianos. Originally, the song O Haralambis was sung to 'tease' during weddings with the text of the song refering to a young man who refuses to marry. The second movement, Stu Psiloriti, refers to an ancient song from the island of Crete. The third movement of the suite is based on the songVasilikos tha gino and is characterised by the sirtaki, probably the most popular Greek dance outside of Greece. This is Greek passion portrayed by a concert band!

Vittorio Monti was born on January 6, 1868 in Naples (Italy). His musical education (violin and composition), he enjoyed at the conservatory there. Around his 30's Monti went to Paris. He earned a living as a conductor and wrote several ballets and operettas. In his last years, Monti died in 1922, he devoted himself to teaching and composing. His famous "Czardas" has made his name known even today. Initially the czardas was a Hungarian folk dance , but after the mid-nineteenth century it was even a dance for the upper-class. Czardas begins with a slow introduction, the Lassan (slow and sad), and then the fast part, Friska, follows. Czardas is not, as somany people think typical gypsy music.

This little concerto for clarinet was written for Peter Holligan , a friend of its composer, and the Fife Youth Concert Band (Scotland). The work was based on traditional Celtic music, and consists of three movements. 1. Reel - a fast dance ending in an atmospheric but virtuoso cadenza. 2. Lament - a slow and melancholy song hinting at the sound of bagpipes. 3. A fast and virtuoso dance in 6/8 time with Irish influence. The work is a wonderful audience-pleaser and an absolute 'must' for all clarinet-players. The band too is called upon and by all means does have its part to play in the piece. Band grade 4, soloist grade 5. Dit Concertino voorklarinet werd geschreven voor Peter Holligan , een vriend van de componist, en de Fife Youth Concert Band (Schotland). Here is another fine piece by Ennio Salvere written on purpose for beginning bands or youth bands. The four movements contrast strongly, but each part appeals to both musicians and listeners. First we have the 'Crazy Calypso' (a dance rhythm originating from the West Indies) that reminds us of Harry Belafonte and steel band music. 'Song for you' is a quiet tuneful ballad; 'Lazy Latin' lets us enjoy a sparkling Boss nova rhythm, whereas the final part 'Great Escape' keeps everybody on the dance floor in a real Disco style. Success guaranteed.

Most people who live in the Caribbean are of an outspokenly straightforward nature, and always in good mood. "Caribbean Summer", a three-movement piece, captures this very mood: Very early in the morning, a summer day begins with "Guadeloupe", a Caribbean waltz. In this the change from a triple meter to a duple meter counter rhythm is of prime importance. From it, the music draws a particular lilt.At noon there is a happy and lively hustle and bustle on the beach. Vendors ("The Coconut Vendor") sing and offer their sugar-peanuts ("Chou-Cou"). A guest spontaneously begins to drum his fingers on a table, a second one reaches for a calabash or a cowbell - a cha-cha-cha is born. Finally, in "Caribbean Nights" a joyful parade of happy people march down the streets. Based on this very feeling, a special dance developed chiefly in the Dominican Republic: a simple basic two-step pattern in even rhythm becomes a "Merengue" together with the right, so to speak contra rotating motion of the hips! This cheerful dance then marks the close of day in a happy way - and in the morning everything will begin over again...
