    Danzas Cubanas - Ignacio Cervantes

Ignacio Cervantes (1847 - 1905) was a Cuban pianist and composer who achieved fame and recognition in his native country. Cervantes is best known for his considerable influence in blending various aspects of creole musical culture with that of Cuban music for a totally unique and appealing sound tableau. Four of Cervantes colorful dances are included in this brilliant setting for wind band. They are Danzas Nos. 1 and 2, the melancholy Soledad, the lively Picatazos, and a reprise of Soledad. In May of 2017 Colonel Bourgeois will premiere this arrangement when he directs Cuban musicians from the National Band in Havana and American musicians from four leading American universities in the inaugural Cuba/U.S Wind Band Symposium.

Tocata & La Tumba de Alejandro Garcia Caturla (from Islas y Montanas) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hanson, Shelley

Shelley Hanson originally composed Islas y Montanas for orchestra. Tocata is the first movement and functions as a fanfare or introduction. It features the entire ensemble clapping rhythmic patterns based on the Cuban 3/2-clave rhythm. It's a great way to get the crowd ready for La Tumba de Alejandro Garcia Caturla, originally the fourth movement from Islas y Montanas. It is beautifully transcribed here for concert band. It is a musical rumination about Cuban composer Alejandro Garcia Caturla (1906-1940) who studied with Nadia Boulanger but was later assassinated while presiding as a judge. It opens with a haunting English horn cadenza (alternate cueing provided) followed by harmonic shifts, intense soli writing and driving rhythms that sweep through the ensemble.

La banda de los guajiros - Sverre Indris Joner

Guajira is both a term for a song form, where most people will recognize the song "Guajira Guantanamera," but also a Cuban word for farmer or fieldworker, as there are many of in the eastern Oriente province of Cuba where this rhythm originated. "La Banda de los guajiros" translates directly to "The Guajira Band."It is composed for wind orchestra by Sverre Indris Joner, who already in 1985 traveled to Cuba to learn the secrets of Caribbean music. The rhythms used in this piece are thoroughly explained in the textbook "Latinmusikkens ABC," which is also published by Noteservice/Norsk Musikkforlag. The piece uses traditional elements from Cuban music such as Guajira, Son Montuno, and Danzn, all falling under the genre of salsa. It is recommended that both conductor and percussionists familiarize themselves with the execution of the different rhythm patterns. Instruments like congas and timbales particularly have a range of different rhythm patterns. The role of the guiro instrument cannot be underestimated. Despite its seemingly simple content, it is the glue that holds everything together!
