    Call of the Ancient Clans

This piece takes players back to ancient times, when neighboring tribes would communicate by way of rhythm instruments. With an interesting, pulsating rhythm and catchy woodwind lines, the engaging music gives students the opportunity to create fun musical moments. Notes generally fall within the first year range, but also provide a good challenge with first clarinets going over the break a few times. In Memoriam

David Maslanka's In Memoriam is a deeply moving tribute built on the cherished hymn "If You But Trust in God to Guide You." Commissioned in honor of Susan Eck Lichtenwalter, the work unfolds from a bold, declarative opening into a sweeping fantasia filled with powerful contrasts--intensity, tenderness, struggle, and ultimately, serenity. Maslanka's masterful variations on the chorale create a musical journey that resonates long after the final quiet measures. An ideal centerpiece for concerts of reflection, remembrance, or spiritual significance.

    Arachnophobia and Fugue

Arachnophobia and Fugue exposes students to the Baroque style of music using dramatic contrasts, light articulation, chorale-style sections, and multiple references to Bach's works. The spider is represented by the xylophone and/or marimba supported by the flutes. As a humorous bonus, auxiliary percussion includes rolled-up newspapers to swat the pesky spider throughout the piece.

    Visigoths

This tone poem, suggested by the 4th Century struggle of the Visigoths within the Roman Empire, contrasts the slow opening four-note motive in the low brass, with quicker more rhythmic material depicting the battles of the tribe with the Roman legions. From these elements, Sean O'Loughlin has crafted an exciting and sonorous piece that will show off the capabilities of a developing young band to great effect. A large percussion section is used with great skill to energize this serious concert work.
