Selections from Kiki's Delivery Service - Joe Hisaishi

Famous musicologist Yuji Numano identified an interesting relationship between classical and film music. Film music is like a second child of 19th century classical music (the first child being 20th century modern music). Although they have a parent-child relationship, there are still major differences."The basic `form' is different. In the history of classical music art forms, there is a continuing dispute on how to convey a story only through music. On the other hand, as a part of motion pictures, film music at times has difficulty being an autonomous art form separate from the visual media. Indeed, film scores alone can lack musical substance. In the sense of acoustical effectiveness, film scoring has absorbed the total aspect of modern and classical music. Yet, there is still a huge distinction from classical music regarding recognizing film music as a standard art form."This Selections from "KIKI'S Delivery Service" is my seventh arrangement of Joe Hisaishi's works. They are either in medley or suite styles. It might be an exaggeration, however, to cite back to Mr. Numano, I have attempted to compensate for the lack of substance in film music by creating an art form more like classical music. Medley should not be about cherry-picking the best bits. I prefer that performers consider the significance of the work's overall structure. It has been 20 years since the premier of the feature animation film "KIKI'S Delivery Service" based on Eiko Kadono's literature for children. Numerous romantic melodies by Joe Hisaishi are used for many occasions and are still very popular. In this arrangement, I have made a medley from the following scenes:1. A Town with an Ocean View2. Starting the Job3. Heartbroken Kiki4. A Gust5. DeparturePlease note that the 4th scene A Gust comes from the "image album" prior to the soundtrack production and is not used in the actual movie.(Kazuhiro Morita, 2008)

    Trois Rag-Caprices - Darius Milhaud

The French composer Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a member of the 'Groupe des Six'. This group of six composers gathering Honegger, Poulence, Auric, Durey, Tailleferre and Milhaud, imitated Erik Satie by revolting against the deeply rooted traditional conventions of that time. They reacted against impressionism (Debussy) and romanticism (Wagner, Mahler) and felt very strongly about the music of Satie and Strawinsky. Milhaud's most popular work is undoubtedly the ballet 'La Cration du Monde', one of the most striking examples of jazz influences in classical music. The premire at the 'Th?tre des Champs Elyses' in October 1923 caused a real scandal with the Paris public. The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for piano were composed one year earlier, in the summer of 1922, and could be considered as a kind of preliminary sketch for 'La Cration du monde'. There are indeed clear similarities between both compositions as to the rhythmical and harmonic aspects. The 'Trois Rag-Caprices' were orchestrated for symphony orchestra by Milhaud himself some time later. The same happened to 'Saudades do Brasil' (1920), a piano composition punctuated with Latin-American influences, which was written after his stay in Rio de Janeiro (1917-18) exactly as his ballet 'Le Boeuf sur le Toit'. Johan de Meij's orchestration of 'Trois Rag-Caprices' for symphonic band is a most welcome addition next to the original band works of Milhaud, such as 'Suite Fran?aise' (1945) and 'West Point Suite' (1951).

Le Mont St.Michel - Serge Lancen

Serge Lancen (Paris 1922) undoubtedly belongs to the top of contemporary European wind music composers. His MANHATTAN SYMPHONY (1962), CAP KENNEDY (1970), SYMPHONIE DE L'EAU (1986) and MISSA SOLEMNIS (1989) are now part of the classical modern symphonic band repertoire. Lancen always writes in the French tradition and is often inspired by folkore, the beauty of the French landscapes and even the great architectural monuments of his country. In this fine suite of four symphonic sketches he was inspired by the splendid site of the 'MONT SAINT-MICHEL'. The work dates from 1976 and was premiered by the French National Police band, conducted by Pierre Bigot, at a concert in the Paris 'Palais des Congrs' on May the 4th 1977. It evokes the splendour of one of Western Europe's great monumental abbeys. The mount arises amidst a symphony of mist and sand; the visitor goes through the main gate and enters the medieval town. He walks up to the abbey church and discovers the magnificent panorama. He recovers some time in an unexpected patch of green and admires the mighty fortress. Finally he reaches the actual abbey and visits the inspiring church and the sober refectory. At sunset, the abbey complex casts fanciful shadows on the beach and soon, in the light of the spots, the spire with the Archangel Michael lits up, high above the sea and the sand, right on the border between Normandy and Brittany.
