Symphonic Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Johnson, Stuart

Symphonic Variations was commissioned by Swindon Young Musicians' Club with funds provided by the W H Smith Arts Programme, and first performed by Swindon Young Musicians, conducted by Bramwell Tovey, at the Wyvern Theatre on January 29, 1989. The opening theme, stated in a Maestoso unison, provides the musical kernel for the entire work. The composer cleverly exploits all the rhythmic possibilities inherent within the chosen theme to provide a piece which is serious enough for detailed study and Festival usage, yet entertaining at the same time.

Pastorale de Provence (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco

Cesarini composed this work as a tribute to the memory of Darius Milhaud, born a century earlier in Aix-en-Provence, France. The premiere, conducted by the composer, was presented by the Civic Philharmonic of Balerna in December, 1992. The titles of the four-part suite include: La Villageoise (The Village Maiden), Le petit berger (The Little Shepherd), La Princesse (The Princess) and Le Lutin (The Imp). The numerous musical reference themes begin with five folksongs from the Provence region and continue with melodies written by French composers of the seventeenth century. Additional interest is created by the use of old dance forms (Ronde, Musette, Pavane and Farandole) to illustrate each historical character.Duration: 9:30

Totally Tropical! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barry, Darrol

Totally Tropical! is in bright Caribbean mood and will benefit from good, rhythmic playing. Flutes, oboes, clarinets and trumpets all have to play the little chromatic figure that starts the main tune and this may need slow practice to become fluent. Additional percussion instruments may be added to give a 'Calypso' sound.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics.Duration: 1:45

Whirlwind (Flute Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fraser, Bruce

Whirlwind is a flute solo and (despite the title!) it will be found that a steady waltz tempo works best. Obviously, it is important that the accompaniment remains delicate and that dynamics are adhered to.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. Windfall (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Fraser, Bruce

Windfall should be taken at a steady march tempo, with full note values and is a useful piece for developing a good band sound. Dynamic changes are particularly important to avoid monotony in the overall sound and young players are introduced to the concept of D.C. al fine.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. Hymnus Antverpiae (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

This hymn was commissioned by "Antwerpen 93". And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated "Cultural Capital of Europe" for 1993. The work-group "animatie" took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premired by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion. Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labelled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible and uncomplicated. The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colourful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.Duration: 4:00

Scarborough Fair, Variations on (Concert Band - Score and parts) - Custer, Calvin

First published in 1989, this work from the late Calvin Custer epitomises his command of orchestration and understanding of musical pacing. The familiar folk melody is stated first by a solo flute then followed by a remarkable series of variations starting with a brass choir accompanied by woodwind flourishes. An Andante variation features the woodwind choir accompanying solos by baritone and oboe, and this leads to a striking fugue variation and bold finish. Truly symphonic band writing at its best.Duration: 4:45

Concerto For Timpani And Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jacob, Gordon

The nature of the timpani means that musical development is rhythmic rather than tonal. In the first movement, a broad theme is announced by the timpani themselves, and immediately echoed and modified by the full wind band. Material is embroidered by woodwinds and developed by the soloist. The second movement (Adagio) is virtually an aria in which we are left with an expressive mood conjured from the timpani themselves. The last movement is a romp - characteristic use of quasi-folk material is well suited to the band and the rhythmic characteristics of the timpani are highlighted.
