Here's your contest piece for your middle school band. A solid Grade 3 with interaction in between the various sections of the band. The tempos are medium, slow, and a bit fast, but non troppo! The harmonies have some post-romantic sounds with longing melodies and interacting counter-melodies. The recapitulation has just a little bit of variety with changes of rhythms and maybe a surprise harmony or two.

This suite of three short movements depicts Popcatepetl, a dormant volcano in Mexico. Useful for developing understanding of this form, the composition includes overture, ballad, and Latin styles. Opportunities abound for teaching the concepts of dynamic contrast, balance between sections, and rhythmic development. There are several short solos, but most of the composition works on the development of full-ensemble skills. Although the movements can be performed as stand-alone selections, the entire suite is less than 6 minutes in length.

La Valiente is a rousing Spanish piece that combines flamenco, tango, and just plain fun that's sure to be a bright spot on any group's next concert. Written in d minor, it modulates approximately halfway through to a happier sounding F major, but as the piece concludes, students find themselves back in d minor. While there are quite a few accidentals, there are none within the piece by which students playing grade 3 music should be surprised, and they lend a nice authenticity to the sound. 1st trumpet's highest note is G. 1st and 2nd clarinets, only, cross the break.
