Paganini Variations (Concert Band - Score only) - Wilby, Philip - McBride, M. Scott

This Wind Band orchestration of Wilby's Paganini Variations attempts to capture the range of colour and expression of the original. There are opportunities abound for every member of the wind orchestra to play a convincing role in the drama. The intention of the Brass Band work was to use more of Paganini than his time honoured melody (from his twenty-fourth Caprice with a set of fourteen variations), but would also attempt to recreate in modern terms something of the wild and romantic spirit of the times.

PARTITA for Concert Band (Darrol Barry) (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Barry, Darrol

This work is cast in four movements: Introit; Impromptu; Elegy (31.12.04); Finale. Grade 5. (Recorded on QPRM150D, CHIVALRY, Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra) PARTITA FOR CONCERT BAND is cast in four movements: Introit - begins majestically with brass, saxes and percussion carrying the main theme from which most of the following ideas originate. It is repeated by the woodwinds and moves via a solo side drum into the piu mosso. New ideas are introduced by trombones, the horns and euphoniums leading to the central idea played by oboe. This leads, in turn, via full band to the closing movement. 2. Impromptu -once again the opening theme is the basis of the whole movement, using most of the composer's tricks, augmentation, retrograde, inversion and fugato, it moves along in a very confident style. A muted solo trumpet links into the third movement. Elegy (26/12/04) - this movement was prompted by the devastating events of Boxing Day 2004, the Asian Tsunami. The movement opens bleakly until a solo flute gives us the main theme over a troubled accompaniment. The opening mood returns but timpani and tam-tam herald return of the main theme for the full band. The opening theme is heard again as the music subsides but never settles. Finale - this spirited 6/8 vivo opens up with percussion and horns and trumpets announce the main idea, punctuated with short chords from the lower band. A new four bar theme is heard over a bass tread, the theme overlaps itself and quavers swirl up and down the band. Material from the first movement is heard transformed by the energy of the finale and the music surges towards a sudden close. Performance time: 15:35

Raise Your Joys And Triumphs High - Swearingen, James

This beautiful setting of one of the most popular hymns ever written, "Christ The Lord is Risen Today," was respectfully commissioned by the Ohio chapter of Phi Beta Mu in memory of James Morgan. Its musical impact is undeniably both breathtaking and stunning beyond all descriptive words. The emotional conclusion of this work allows for the audience to sing the hymn while an antiphonal brass section soars high above with emotional reverence. Both of these creative ideas are purely optional, but they should be definitely thought of as highly effective when applied. Inspiring!

    Soaring!

Soaring is a mode of flight in which height is gained slowly by using air that is moving upwards. Written for music educator's Randy Heuvelman's 30 years of service to the Woodland (Illinois) School District, Soaring paints a music portrait of dedication, compassion and intensity, all aspects of this educator's tenure. A slower middle section alternating between choirs of woodwinds and brass paints a serene portrait with lush harmonies and soaring countermelodies. The extensive percussion scoring utilizes timbres that add and complement the completed musical setting. Soaring is truly one of David's best works

SPECTRUM (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Vinter, Gilbert - Newton, Rodney

Extra Score. SPECTRUM. This work caused much consternation when it was used as the brass band test piece at the 1969 British Open Competition. The score is an uncompromising one and as colourful as its title suggests. The various episodes of the work are each named after a colour from the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Purple (changed from Violet when Vinter became conscious of his failing health). It is a piece of violent mood swings challenging all sections of the band. Many consider this to be the finest of Vinter's small output for band. Duration: 12:40 Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM151D Time Lines (Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.12)

Storia Eroica (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waignein, Andre

This composition was commissioned by the "Municipal Brass Band of Luxembourg-Bonnevoie". It was premiered in presence of the Grand-Duke Heir Henri on January 24, 1998 with this orchestra, and with the composer as director. This work is a musical evocation describing this magnificent Luxembourgian region and her inhabitants. The overture evokes the serenity met in this region. An orchestrale development, as rhythmic as sound, propels the orchestra in a "military" atmosphere putting in evidence all the registers of the orchestra. This tension is maintained until the general explosion of the whole. One cantilena appears in all the innocence. Gradually, the orchestration suppresses, until the exhaustion. The passage which follows represents the tempestuous events which took place through ages. A spectacular cadence, by the clarinet or by the soprano saxophone, terminates this disorder. An ample and lyric theme reflects the generosity which always played an important role. Then, having found some of initial themes, work ends in an atmosphere of enjoyment, developed in rich and eclectic one variety which proves the sphere of influence of the sound colour at Andr Waignein.Duration: 14:00

Triumphal Prelude (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

This work was commissioned by the Musikkapelle Heiden, Germany, on the occasion of the centenary of this versatile and energetic music society. Triumphal Prelude begins with fireworks of sounds and fanfares, which are worthy of a centennial. It is therefore an ideal opening work. Undoubtedly, the sparkling music will enthrall the audience, thanks to the dazzling sound of the Brass players - who can be heard above the radiant performance of the Woodwind players. 04:40

Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes. The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future. 0:09:10
