After a radiant introduction by the brass section, the first variation on the chorale appears. Subsequently, the song is rendered in its original form. Then three more variations follow. The result is a solemn work that is very fitting within the context of a church service, but is also suitable for many other occasions.

A Sinfonietta is a "small symphony", so it is a composition that does not boast the length of a real symphony (although this could be the case) and so allows the composer to take some liberties. In this sinfonietta we have three contradictory themes. In the first part there is a reflecting theme at the start with the woodwinds, later we have a more pathetic theme with the low brass and finally a clear, light theme with the complete band.
