£104.00A Future Celebration (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Houben, Kevin
Future Celebration was composed on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Royal Socialist Wind Band 'De Toekomst' from Sint-Niklaas (Belgium). In this colourful compostion Kevin Houben succeeds in evoking the bustling textile and cigar industry of the nineteenth and twentieth century in this East Flemish city Sint-Niklaas. After all, these crafts were characteristic for the wealth they brought to the city. Still testimony of this are the 2 unique (niche)museums in Sint-Niklaas: the Knitwear museum and the Pipe and Tobacco museum. Even in times of great crises eg. during the Interbellum the city continued flourishing proving the unique collection of classified art deco houses, amongst others the former People's House, in which the Royal Socialist Wind Band still rehearse. This historic background of Sint-Niklaas and of the Wind Band in particular has been musically presented by Kevin Houben in Future Celebration. The brief, but energetic and powerful opening of the work by the brass instruments gives musical expression to Sint-Niklaas as a prosperous city. After the presentation of a majestic and lyrical theme by the woodwinds an allegro with a cheerful theme takes a look at the future, hopefully looking at the next milestones/ celebrations the city and its orchestra are still expecting in the future. The original setting of this beautiful melody was for Strings and Chorus. This Concert/Wind Band version features the brass ensemble, the woodwind choir, as well as the full band. It is intended for combined Band and Chorus, but may be performed by Band alone. It is completely compatible with the published choral edition, except that it is written one-half step lower (E-flat instead of E major). There are no accidentals, and, apart from the instructions for andante and legato, the phrasing is left to the conductor. The simplicity and rich harmonic structure make this an important addition to the repertoire of young bands, and a perfect piece for any band to program for the Christmas season.

This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically.
