Three Bites of the Apple Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
One of the best known nicknames for a city that is perhaps New York: "The Big Apple". Already in the thirties of the last century, this name is often used in New York jazz scene. With "The Big Apple" Manhattan was intended. It was the place to be. Around 1920 Harlem was the center of a thriving black culture. This period is known as the "Harlem Renaissance". In the famous Cotton Club were many concerts of greats like Duke Ellington. Broadway attracts millions of tourists. Many of them visit here one of the many musicals sometimes for years on the boards are placed. Broadway splashes sparkles and swings. Peter Martin shows us three bites tests of this imaginary apple. Band Fever - Otto M. Schwarz
Modern wind music in the style of the great Big Bands was the model for the composition Band Fever by Otto M. Schwarz. It was written on commission of the prestigious South Tyrolese concert band, Symphonic Winds. The piece features two soloists, one saxophone and one flugel. Rhythms like Hip Hop Style and Double Samba support a catchy melody, which is later taken up by the full band, forming the basis for the above-mentioned soloists' improvisations. A unique work in the world of wind music, Band Fever allows both soloists and conductor to display individuality and creativity. It is especially suitable as an opener of the light part of a concert, or as afeature number for special soloists in the orchestra.

What are the true qualities of a person? Outward beauty or inner values? Or perhaps a balance of the two? This question has probably been posed by everyone at some time or another, and the answer is as challenging as it is subjective. This is also the theme of this work. The poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is known for his big nose and his great intellect. The 17th century novelist harbours feelings for the beautiful Roxane but is sure that this love will never be reciprocated. Roxane herself falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette, who is certainly handsome but could be described as stupid. Cyrano de Bergerac writes love poems on behalf of Christian to win Roxane's heart. And then there is the Count Guiche, who is married but also wants to make her his mistress. Christian and Roxane eventually marry and the furious Count Guiche sends Christian and Cyrano, who serve together in the Captains of Gascony regiment, to the front and, some months later, on a suicide mission. Shortly before the battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him so much for his beauty as for his inner values. Christian is dismayed and begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth, but he can't bring himself to do so. Christian de Neuvillette dies in battle and Cyrano de Bergerac remains silent about the true provenance of the letters. Only much later does the truth come to light: scarred by the war, Cyrano visits Roxane in the convent where she has been living since Christian's death and confesses his love for her. He ultimately dies in Roxane's arms.Duration: 8.30

Beginning with a cascade of chimes, soaring woodwind runs, and bold brass lines, "Deck the Hall" and "Here We Come A-Caroling" are presented with dynamic flair, interspersed with brief fanfare-like episodes. The mood transitions to a jaunting sleigh ride across the winter landscape, partnering the second time through with "Jingle Bells," as the spirited celebration closes with a short coda, drawn from musical materials heard in the opening measures of the work. Guardian Angels gives a musical expression to the legend of Reverend Louis Henri Bahler referring to the use of Psalm 34. North-west Veluwe and in particular Oldebroek (The Netherlands) has a very rich religious tradition which is demonstrated by its monumental churches. They tell the story of a stirring history in which Reverend Bahler played a crucial role. Inspired by his arrival as a pastor in 1870 in the neighbouring Oosterwolde, two big religious communities came into existence with their characteristic churches but this rivalry also resulted in great social unrest. This composition reflects on this striking personality and in particular on the story of the Angel Guard. 'One evening Reverend Bahler has given a sermon in Oldebroek and he walks over the Church path through the pastures to Oosterwolde. On this dark and stormy evening Bahler's opponents are waiting for the pastor in ambush. They want to drown him in a watercourse near the Church path but abandon their plan because Bahler is accompanied by two men. The next day it comes to an encounter between Bahler and his opponents. They repent their, fortunately unexecuted, plan. Bahler firmly believes that on the previous night he walked alone over the Church path, and was not accompanied by two men. It was concluded that it must have been the angels who had protected Bahler.' Psalm 34 is central to this composition and this because of its powerful melody but also because the lyrics of verse 4 of the rhymed version fit in well with the special legend of Reverend Bahler: The Lord's angel gathered round him An invincible heavenly guard, Who tries God's will, around him So he's well guard(ed) A second melodious and harmonic cell is a musical transformation of the name 'Bahler'. This cell is varied in major and minor third chords and sometimes used as the main idea or apotheosis, but also serves as an accompanying cell or as a bridge between other melodic and rhythmic constructions.
