The composer, arranger and band leader Bert Kaempfert is considered a giant in the field of easy listening music. He wrote songs for world renowned stars such as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Shirley Bassey, Anita Kerr, Frank Sinatra and many others. He created his own unique sound with the Bert Kaempfert Orchestra and had huge international success. His affinity with 'black music' is significant and his fascination with South African sounds led to their incorporation into several of his compositions and arrangements. Roland Kernen has used the following well-known tunes in this medley: Zambesi, African Beat, Wimoweh, Happy Trumpeter and Skokiaan.

The piece is intended to describe the scenery at the south-western part of Norway called Jaeren - all with a little humorous twist. In this fresh arrangement, we meet the cool animals and the farmers living at Jren. In the melody, the middle parts (finally!) get a chance to shine. Together with a funky drum beat, the Old MacDonald has never been this funky!The composer has drawn inspiration from the old nursery rhyme Old MacDonald as well as music by James Brown, Deep Purple, Seagull by Bad Lip Reading and also the old band classic, Arctic Funk by Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen. Originally written to accompany a "trick horse" act with the Barnum & Bailey's Circus, the tune soon became so popular that it was used for a wide variety of acts including clown "walk-a-bouts". Bob Foster's arrangement retains all of the color and excitement of the original while making it playable with the modern concert band instrumentation. It's not easy, but it sure is fun!

Written in overture form, the piece draws its inspiration from dance movements found in contemporary stage, ballet and theatrical productions. The piece opens with fast-paced angular gestures accompanied by rapid rhythmical punctuations before yielding to a contrasting lyrical section with long, flowing lines and many opportunities for expressive playing.
