In 1984 the Corciano (Italy) Tourist Authority initiated a composition competition for wind band. For this event Andr WAignein composed "Alternances for Symphonic Band", a piece which won him the first prize in the competition. The opening of the work is based on a very tonal foundation. The English horn (or alto saxophone) introduces a rich and warm theme which is immediately taken up by the whole orchestra in a grandiose manner. The subsequent development shows off all the elements of the orchestra to the full. In the second movement, the English horn (or alto saxophone) comes to the fore again. A harmonic change gradually takes us back to the allegro of the firstmovement. The musical development is here dominated by exuberance, virtuosity and rhythm.

Die Lustigen Dorfschmiede - Julius Fucik
Reading the title of this piece, namely "The Happy Village Smiths" it rather suggests a character piece than a zestful march. However, the saying "Don't let yourself be fooled" also applies in this instance, as "The Happy Village Smiths" belong to Fuc k's most popular marches. In an article that appeared in a Styrian local paper in the 1930s, Christine Fuc k speaks about common vacations with her husband in Gleisdorf. On the occasion of a walk in the vicinity of that city the couple came past a blacksmith's shop. The rhythm of the two blacksmiths hammering away on the anvil allegedly inspired Fuc k to compose this piece. Since the march goes back to the year 1908, and Christine and Fuc k's friendship started - not without frictions - only one year before that date, there are doubts concerning the validity of the story, although this report constitutes the only reference on the birth of this march.

'Courte Ouverture' as translated from the French means 'Short Overture'. Written for a medium level ensemble, it commences with a high trill in the piccolo followed by a flourish in the flutes before the main theme is introduced. This primary melody can be heard throughout the selection. It then transitions into an almost hymn-like middle section before an accelerando takes us back to the flute flourish and main theme. This piece uses the music ensemble to its fullest. Memorable melodies and traditional harmonies are spread throughout the instrumentation. In 1780, Lord Charles Cornwallis attempted to invade Charlotte, but the city's residents united and expelled him. General Cornwallis went on to describe the city as "a hornet's nest of rebellion." In this Revolutionary War inspired piece, a strong florid melody is passed around the various sections of the ensemble. This work is a great opportunity for more advanced bands to focus on stylistic playing between the bright and triumphant theme and quieter larghetto passage. Students will enjoy taking a trip back in time with this piece full of Colonial American vigor.

This arrangement for trombone section and band combines two well-known wartime songs The Quartermaster's Store and Bless 'em all to give the trombone section a thorough workout as well as a lot of fun. The Quartermaster's Store is a traditional song from England. The origins of both tune and words are uncertain and may actually date back as far as the English Civil War. The origins of Bless 'em All are also unclear. The words have been credited to Fred Godfrey in 1917 set to music composed by Robert Kewley but earlier versions of the song may have been in existence among British military personnel in the 1880s in India. It was first recorded by George Formby Jr in 1940 and became a patriotic song.Duration: 2.45
