Back to Normandy is a composition for concert band on the occasion of D-Day. On D-Day (June 6, 1944) the liberation of Western Europe started at the beach of Normandy. A long campaign through Europe followed before the liberation was complete. Back to Normandy describes the first hours of the landing with the shelling of the German positions as a (musical) peak. As an introduction you will see and hear de preperations for the biggest campaign ever. Very special and unique is the fact that the music of Back to Normandy can be performed synchronously with a movie with original footage, specially made for this composition. This will without a doubt be an extra experience for the audience. So far performances like this were exclusively for professional orchestras (like George Fenton, Earth). This piece is specially suitable for concert bands that want to offer their audience something special and also want to honour the liberators. The movie to practise for the concert is on Youtube (meassures and metronome are visible/audiblematen). George Washington Suite - Mike Hannickel

GEORGE WASHINGTON SUITE is made up of three tunes known to have been composed for (or about) George and Martha Washington in their own time. Probably the best known of the three is the first movement, WASHINGTON'S GRAND MARCH, which is believed to have been written by Francis Hopkinson. He was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. The second movement has the delightful title "Fancy Menuit with figure Dance by Two young Ladies in the presance of Mrs. Washington in 1792. Phila." sic (The quaint original spellings and capitalizations are preserved here for historical interest.) A fife-and-drum style arrangement of the BRANDYWINE QUICKSTEP completes this early American triptych.The stately and moderate tempos that fit the music of this era so well also ensure that the arrangements remain accessible to young bands. The origin of the song Piet Swerts arranged for concert band in Russian Gipsy Song probably lies with Russian gypsies, who know it under the title Dorogoj Dlinnojn and who ardently consider it their mental property.The melody of this Russian folk song is better known under the title Those Were the Days My Friend, the song that singer Mary Hopkins made famous in 1968. Within a year after she had issued this song, well over five million records of it had been sold. There are also versions in French (Les temps des fleurs), Spaans (Qu tiempo tan feliz), Italian (Quelli erano giorni), and German (An jenem Tag) of this song full of nostalgia about the "good old days."

Duke Ellington (1889- 1974) was a very successful American pianist, conductor, composer and arranger. His orchestra existed for decades and was able to survive thanks to the enormous hits that he and his collaborators wrote. Many of those songs now belong to the standard repertoire of jazz musicians.Billy Strayhorn (1915-1967) was arranger and composer with the orchestra from 1939, and also wrote Take the A-Train, which became the band's favourite song from 1941. Many recordings were made of it. Juan Tizol (1900-1984, valve trombone) played with Duke Ellington almost his entire career and composed Latin songs for the orchestra. He is co-composer of Caravan and Perdido.Just likein the original Duke Ellington concerts, the medley begins with Take the A-Train, followed by a number of classics from the repertoire of the legendary orchestra. In some songs there are soloists, notable a solo on kettledrums in C- Jam Blues. This solo can also be improvised.When rehearsing a lot of attention has to be paid to the drum and bass, which together form the rhythm section and drive the orchestra on. The other sections have to be tight and create a coherent swing effect. The swing shouldn't be too stiff, and can vary per song. For example in "In a Sentimental Mood", the melody can be played almost straight (classically), while the rhythm section continues swinging.

Asteroid - Otto M. Schwarz
Asteroids and comets have played an important role throughout the history of life on earth. It is quite probable that the dinosaurs have been exterminated by an asteroid's impact in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and fire storms wiped out all life. This is the year 2067 according to the Christian calendar. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and caused an asteroid to enter the earth's power of gravitation. It is instoppably approaching the blue planet. As its peoples have been fighting each other continuously, they missed the building of a global defence system against dangers coming from space. A scanner records the asteroid andimmediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is judged 50% by the experts. Plans are made to shoot the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser guns in order to throw it off its track, but they fail. The asteroid's size seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Those in the know stare at the night sky in bewilderment. But for the time being, there is still peace on earth....
