The Berlin Rag evokes the rich harmonic sound-world of 1920s Berlin and contemporary jazz, fused with the technique of American Ragtime. The scoring is highly colouristic in nature, and has avoided any weighty doublings. There are also many solo opportunities for all the principal players, either chamber-like combinations, duets or solo lines. The magical crunchy effect of the tutti band is reserved until the end where it is finally released in a blaze of brass writing, spiked with timpani and percussion.

In the most literal sense: a piece for an occasion. The actual occasion was Jan de Haan's twentieth anniversary as a conductor of the top Dutch brass band, "Soli Deo Gloria" (Leeuwarden). To mark the occasion, the band commissioned the Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to create a surprise piece: without knowledge of the person being celebrated, a suitable source of inspiration was sought for. After some thought the chorale-theme from Camille Saint-Sans organ symphony was chosen, a piece with which Jan de Haan has a special bond. Apart from this chorale, Homage is also based on the names of notes taken from 'Jan de Haan' and 'Soli Deo Gloria', resulting in the tone row: DEGAH. Both elements are combined together and form a grand climax towards the end of the piece when the whole band unites in the Saint Sans' theme.Duration: 5:30

A powerful work. An opening fanfare leads directly to an Allegro risoluto, which exudes determination and forthrightness. The second movement follows without a break and is a continuous plaint in which the melody seems forever seeking resolution like a troubled soul searching for respite. Only in the closing bars does peace seem to take over. The final movement, marked Allegro non troppo, starts with a cheering fanfare that leads to a bright and breezy romp, with a rustic feel about it. When the fanfare reappears we are suddenly immersed in exaltations of joy that really give a feeling of optimism as we proceed to the end of the piece via a short Coda.

Catcher of Shadows was written in celebration of the work of photographer Frank Meadow Sutcliffe who lived and worked in the Yorkshire fishing port of Whitby at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. His work is largely of the sea, its tall ships and the people that live by and from it. The world which he catalogued is gone into our Romantic heritage, and a true northern nostalgia is one of the strongest flavours of his work. The music has sought to catch the flavour as well as some of the substance of his original work, even though particular photographs are directly connected with particular parts of the music. With his memories of the magic of joy, fear and freedom, Cesarini seeks to bring the figures of the book to life musically in his Tom Sawyer Suite. Each of the first four movements describes a figure from the story. Tom Sawyer is depicted in the first movement, where the characteristic "cake walk" rhythm is used. The second movement depicts Huckleberry Finn. The third movement is slower, more expressively melancholic and is dedicated to Becky Thatcher. Then there is Injun Joe, who tries to catch Tom in the fourth movement with the fifth movement leading to a happy end.Duration: 12:00
