Peter's favorite gospel song, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, has been used as the basis for this piece of contrasts which takes the listener through many styles and moods. This Symphony in two parts is an early work from the celebrated composer Ida Gotkovsky. Attracted by composition from her earliest years, Ida Gotkovsky entered the Conservatoire Nationale Superieur de Musique de Paris. After passing some years in these classes in the rue de Madrid, she was awarded all the leading prizes for writing and composition. She also gained many international awards including the Prix Blumenthal and the Prix de l'Institut de France. This artist is situated in the French School which, in her view, is the ideal synthesis of the Art of Music. Chamber music, symphonic music, lyrical music, ballet music. All are widely represented among her works. Numerous State commissions have been awarded to her, including an Opera 'Le reve de Makar' for which she wrote the libretto herself. This work was crowned with the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris. At the age of 32 she wrote this impressive and beautiful masterpiece in the style of Ravel.

Serge Lance was born in Paris 1922. The whole of his life has been dominated by music. He wrote his first work at the age of four.Lancen studied the piano with Marguerite Long and composition with Tony Aubin at the conservatory of his native town. In 1949 he won a prize for his Etudes, and some time later he was awarded the Prix de Rome! His work as a composer is very varied and includes symphonic music, choral works, ballet music and several concertos.Versailles, composed and premiered in 1980, is a 4-part piece in which Serge Lancen seems to paint a musical portrait of the wellknown castle of Versailles.

As a gifted young composer, Jules Massenet (1842-1912) wrote several operas that were never produced or printed; but at the age of 25, he enjoyed his first opera production in Paris. Following that success he became a popular and successful part of the Paris music scene. In 1878, he was appointed professor of advanced composition at the conservatory, and it was while he held this position that he composed his Parade Militaire for orchestra. This lively tune is full of life, energy and subtleties, with great style and elegance, and some sudden dynamic surprises.

In 1792, at the age of 22, Beethoven left his native Bonn to seek his fortune in the imperial capital, Vienna, where had lessons with Haydn, Salieri and Albrechtsberger and gained fame as a virtuoso pianist.The annual Artists' Pension Society Ball was a renowned high-society occasion in the city and new dance music was written every year by the popular composers of the time, including Haydn, Kozeluch, Dittersdorf and Eybler. In 1795 Beethoven provided a set of 12 minuets and 12 German dances, a form from the villages of Bavaria and Austria which was to lead to the development and popularity of the waltz in Vienna later in the century. Originally written for orchestra, these dances are also popular in their piano arrangements. The two dances used in this arrangement are taken from this 1795 set.
