When Time Will Be No More - James Curnow
This work was commissioned in memory of Peter J. Swanson, a trumpet and cornet player who tragically died at the tender age of fourteen. Peter's favorite gospel song, Just a Closer Walk with Thee, has been used as the basis for this piece of contrasts which takes the listener through many styles and moods. The spiritual character of the original song resounds gloriously in When Time Will Be No More.

Vilja-Lied - Franz Lehár
Franz Lehr was born in Komrom, Hungary on 30th April 1870. From the age of fifteen he received composition and violin lessons at the Prague conservatory from Anton n Dvork. In 1905 he composed The Merry Widow which became an instant worldwide success. The libretto of this operetta provides a succession of intimate arias and duets with festive ensembles. The Vilja-Lied is one of these arias. In this edition for concert band all the poignant beauty of the original remains.

Overture for Wind Band, Op. 24 - Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
Felix Mendelssohn composed the first of his two works for wind band in 1824 at the age of 15. This work, originally entitled Notturno, was scored for eleven winds. It was later rescored for a much larger contingent and publishedas Overture for Wind Band. The work is in two main sections, an extended andante introduction and the main body of the overture marked allegro vivace. While not generally considered one of Mendelssohn's masterworks, the Overtureof Band is nonetheless a valuable part of the band's early repertoire. This edition replaces the obsolete instruments with their modern versions and resolves many inconsistencies that plagued the original score.

Suite from the Incidental Music. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809 - 1847) composed the music for William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream at two different times. In 1826, at the age of 16, he wrote a concert overture (Op. 21). Sixteen years later, in 1842, he composed the incidental music (opus 61) for King Frederick William IV of Prussia, in which he incorporated the existing overture. The overture premiered in Stettin (then in Prussia, now Szczecin, Poland) on February 20, 1827, conducted by Carl Loewe. Mendelssohn had to travel 80 miles through a raging snowstorm to get to the concert, which became his first public appearance. The first British performance of the overture was conducted by Mendelssohn himself on June 24, 1829, at the Argyll Rooms in London. After the concert, Thomas Attwood was given the score of the overture for safekeeping, but left it in a taxi and was never found. Mendelssohn later rewrote the overture entirely from memory.Duration: 14.45

A Man's Destiny has the Frisian line Yn Ieren en Sinen (with much conviction) as its subtitle. The work was commissioned by CMV Harmonie Sneek (based in Friesland, The Netherlands) to acknowledge their 95th anniversary. The composer based this work on the life of a former member of the band, who played flugelhorn in the ensemble until the age of 86. Their favourite piece of music, Canon by Thomas Tallis, provided a great deal of musical inspiration for this characteristic and versatile work in which the flugelhorn plays a significant role.Duration: 11.00

"Kanreki" is a special term used to celebrate reaching the age of 60 in Japan. The composer was inspired by some of Professor Nakatsukasa's admirable characteristics upon composing this work: he speaks softly and at the same level as his students; he is fashionable, stylish and refined. William Alwyn (1905-1985) studied at the Royal Academy of Music where, at the age of 21, he was appointed Professor of Composition - a position he held for nearly thirty years. Apart from his vast output of serious music he contributed nearly 200 scores for the cinema. Starting, mainly with documentaries he wrote his first full feature-length score in 1941.The Crimson Pirate (1952) has music written in the form of an overture. As the title suggests the film was a swashbuckling adventure with romance thrown in for good measure. As always, Alwyn's music echoed the action on the screen!
