Highdays and Holidays (The Mortimer Revel) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the Bronze Age. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energetic overture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel. From Ancient Times (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band, inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly 'ancient times' while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!Duration: 18:30

Largo (from Winter, The Four Seasons) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Vivaldi, Antonio - Sparke, Philip
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) stands, with Handel and J.S. Bach, as one of the titanic figures of late Baroque composition. Not only was he lauded as a composer of vocal and instrumental works both sacred and secular, he was without serious competition, the most prolific composer of his age. In addition to hundreds of vocal works, including forty-nine operas, he composed five hundred concertos. The Four Seasons are probably the best known of his concerti with the second movement, Largo, portraying time spent by a roaring fire listening to the rain pounding against the window. This arrangement for concert band retains all the warmth of the original.Duration: 3:45

The little pieces that form 'For England, Harry and St. George' may be played individually, in pairs, scattered through a programme or, when given complete, may even be played in a different order. All take their inspiration from the music of mediaeval and renaissance Britain, the scene of political intrigue, social turmoil and military strife. Chapel Royal (A Simple Chorale) (Concert Band) - Carroll, Fergal
The chorale that forms the basis of this piece is entirely original but attempts modestly to evoke something of the spirit of the great composers of the Tudor age, at once rich but slightly austere, with an occasionally modal feel. There are almost no changes of metre and the marking is Largo, demanding a dignified tempo which lets the music breathe but keeps it moving. Duration: 1:20

Poet and Peasant Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Suppe, Franz Von - Takahashi, Tohru
Preludes and overtures were often written to set the mood of Viennese folk plays and therefore might be used for more than one production. Such was the case for Poet and Peasant, which introduced a comedy of the that name in 1846. The piece had already been heard as the overture to the play Lots of money, short of sleep and may also have prefaced two other plays. This overture did not belong to an opera until several years after its 1845 composition date. The themes from this overture are among the most often quoted material for comic effects for stage productions and animated cartoons. Probably, they represent, in sound, an era of nostalgia from the old-time park band concerts and are familiar to audiences of all age groups. This composition deserves to be heard in its original context as a serious, but highly entertaining, selection.Duration: 10:15

For the Next Thousand (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.
Perhaps a strange characteristic, but mankind has always had a fear of changing centuries and millennia. The end of the world and all kind of natural catastrophes has been forecasted, but have never come to pass. In For The Next Thousand composer Otto Schwarz tries to be more positive. In this piece he makes a toast to the new age, in which wind music too has to find a new way of staying attractive. The piece has elements of film music and has a slow-rock middle section, with a sax solo.Duration: 5:45

Marinarella Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)
Julius Fucik (1872-1916) was born in Prague, Czech Republic. He studied under Antonin Dvor?k and at a young age played in military bands and later became bandmaster, a profession he practiced in various cities with many bands. In 1913 he settled in Berlin where he started his own music publishing house. As a composer Fucik is known for his light entertaining music however he also wrote chamber music, songs, choral works, a mass, a requiem and an unfinished opera. Many of his works have fallen into oblivion but many of his marches such as Einzug der Gladiatoren, Regimentskinder and Florentiner Marsch are still often played. With the concert overture Marinarella, Fucik takes us to an imaginary seaside resort on a beautiful spring day. Marinarella, a girl of the sea, accompanies us on our stroll. Leisurely walking couples on the boulevard, the murmur of the sea, fragments of a waltz melody from a caf? and a concert band performing a promenade concert pass you by. A fantastic opening work for any concert. 0:11:30
