Schola Vitae, dedicated to the former director of UGDA Music School in Luxembourg, Paul Scholer, describes in an 8-minute piece that learning and playing music is a school for life. Starting with popular scales that ascend and descend through various keys, an essential tool familiar to every musician appears: the metronome. It sets the tempo, and musicians practice their themes together or against each other, register by register. In music, however, it's not just about technique and precision, but also about emotions. Music connects people, fosters friendships, and accompanies them through the highs and lows of life. The sense of togetherness in music becomes increasingly audible. Everyone works together and pulls in the same direction to ultimately achieve something great.Georges Sadeler, born in 1988 is a Luxembourgish composer and saxophonist with the Grand Ducal Military Band of Luxembourg. His father kindled his interest in composing and arranging at an early age, a study he later continued under his two teachers Marco Ptz and Claude Lenners, both of whom taught at the Conservatoire of Music, Luxembourg. He gradually began to establish his own style, combining the enormous range of possibilities of contemporary music and classical music and, in the years that followed, he won six first prizes at various national and international composition competitions. Danceries Set II was commissioned by Keith Allen and Birmingham Symphonic Winds, supported by PRS for Music Foundation and the RVW Trust. The world premi?re of this work was given by Birmingham Symphonic Winds, conducted by Keith Allen, at the CBSO Centre, Birmingham in 2011. This second set of Danceries continues the format established in Danceries (Set I), namely in using material taken from Playford's Dancing Master, a collection of folk and popular tunes published in the seventeenth century, to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have been more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms, but as before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood. The outer movements - Jennie's Bawbee and Peascod's Galliarda - share a use of driving percussion writing with a military air. Tom Tinker's Toye and Heart's Ease (movements two and three) are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material; melodies now occur in various keys and are supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances. Danceries has come of age! Duration: 15.00

The Ukrainian Dmitri Bortniansky (1751-1825) received lessons at the local singing school in his hometown of Hlukhiv, and soon his extraordinary talent was recognised. He was somewhat of a child prodigy, writing his first opera at a young age. Following his studies Bortniansky was appointed court composer and Kapellmeister of the Imperial Chapel Choir. In the period that followed, he wrote - in addition to a number of operas, instrumental works, and a cycle of songs - more than a hundred religious works for a cappella choir, in which he combined Russian-orthodox and Ukrainian traditions with late 18th century European music. The appealing melody of Ich bete an die Macht der Liebe (Prayer to the Power of Love) became well-known, especially in Germany, in combination with German text by Gerhard Tersteegen. This arrangement by Michael Bilkes reflects the atmosphere of the original work very well.Duration: 3:45

Dissonant harmonies suggest rough seas, turbulent weather, and other constant dangers that sailors must endure. Come Fly with Me was written for Frank Sinatra, and was the title track of his 1958 album of the same name. The song sets the tone for the rest of the album, describing adventures in exotic locales, in Bombay, Peru and Acapulco Bay as the Jet Age began. It subsequently became part of Sinatra's concert repertoire and would feature in numerous performances. Some of the more recent recordings are done by Michael Bubl? and Robbie Williams and the song appears in very many movies. The arrangement is inspired by Buble, Robbie W. and SinatraFlexible instrumentation (Flex 5 ShowBlow) makes it playable for small as well as larger ensembles.Duration: 3.30

The Finnish-Swedish clarinetist and composer Bernhard Crusell (1775-1838) was born in Nystad in a poor family of bookbinders. He started studying clarinet in Stockholm at a young age and established himself as a clarinet soloist and was appointed director of the regimental band as a 16-year-old. The following year he became a solo clarinetist in the Royal Court Orchestra, which was conducted by his composition teacher Abb? Vogler. Crusell was offered positions as a musician in other orchestras in Europe, but King Gustav IV Adolf wanted to keep him in the Royal Orchestra and gave the job as chief conductor of the bodyguard regiment's band. Bernhard Crusell composed a lot of music for both orchestra, ensembles and singers. This beautiful adagio is from his first of a total of three clarinet concerts. Duration: 3.45

Suite in Three Movements. Mammoths were a family of elephants that, with one exception, died out at the end of the last ice age. Their closest living relative is the Asian elephant. In many places in the world one can find mammoth remains. In Norway (especially in Gudbrandsdalen), 20 discoveries of teeth and skeletal remains have been made after mammoths that lived here between 40,000 and 50,000 years ago. On cave paintings and carvings you can see many pictures of mammoths with other animals. Pictures of killed mammoths have also been found with humans. Mammoth Moutain Suite describes a bunch of hunters looking for mammoths. Imagine the majestic animals, what it felt like to see the herd in the mountains and what it sounded like when the 6 ton heavy and 3.5 meter tall mammoths were on the run. Duration: 7.30

Highdays and Holidays was commissioned by the South Berks Concert Band to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The band rehearses in the village of Mortimer, which has a long and fascinating history dating back to, and beyond, the Bronze Age. Mortimer is famous for The Mortimer Revel, an annual event which was apparently a fairly rumbustious and sometimes violent affair. Highdays and Holidays seeks to capture some of this festive event in the form of an energetic overture, which explores a variety of moods including the somewhat chaotic atmosphere of the Revel.
