Cast in three short movements the work endeavours to recreate the pioneering spirit of the journey across America (the then 'New World') as this vast continent was opened up and its wonders exposed. The three dance episodes that make up the suite are symbolic in an analogous sense to this 'reaching' principle: the first - Earth Dance - is a vigorous overture, pushing out the frontiers; the interlude - Moon Dance - contemplates the huge distances to be crossed and Sun Dance represents the realisation of the American dream, rhythmic and full of energy. Cats Tales pays tribute to four wonderful musicians who shared a love of jazz and New York City. Film composer Elmer Bernstein is remembered in 1) Catalonia before a musical gear change that references the work of his contemporary colleague, "Bernstein East", aka Leonard Bernstein. The presence of West Side Story looms large here. Henry Mancini's most famous composition (which concerned a cat of the pink variety) provides the inspiration for the 2nd movement, 2) Catwalk before saxophone legend Sonny Rollins's jazz standard Airegin is given a contrafact treatment in 3) Scat! allowing a number of instrumental soloists to shine. NB: The suite can be extended by including the trombone solo Catnap (see above) and the Toccata (see below), available separately

The movement is an actual gondola song coupled with the jaunty fanfares of Monteverdi and Gabrieli's Sonata pian'e forte. The most substantial movement is the final Palio, an unashamedly programmatic evocation of the historic Sienese horse-race, ending with a Tuscan folk-song. Duration: 16-18 mins

Faber is the ancient Latin name that was used to designate artisans. The Suite, which is divided into three movements, pays tribute to them, in the hope that their activities will not completely disappear. The first movement (Maestoso) represents the carpenter who, after completing his creation admires it with satisfaction. The second movement (Adagio) describes the work of the tailor: the first part is more meditative and portrays the use of needle and thread, while the second, characterized by forceful rhythmic strettos, describes the ancient and complex use of the weighted loom. The last movement (Presto), characterized by irregular rhythms and constant changes of tempo, introduces us to a blacksmith's shop full of intense and loud metallic noises.
