The composer writes: This piece originally started as a personal tribute to my late mother. Not long after writing the opening ideas, I was approached to write music to accompany a rendition of the poem, 'We Will Keep the Faith' by Moina Michael for performance as part of the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One. The appropriateness of the music already written, and the sentiment behind both concepts, was a coincidence too good to overlook. Rarely sentimental and always practical, I feel sure my mother would be delighted that the music she originally inspired was being used to portray a much wider universal message of remembrance.

The mechanized sounds of the turtle ships are brought to musical life through melody that rises and falls like the sea. The sea battle is depicted with opposing forces of percussion giving way to a final victorious fanfare. Talisman tells the story of the "Pierre du Serment", an event that took place in 1639 in the village of Fontenotte, on the border between France and Switzerland. Composed of three brothers and their parents, the Billod family lived peacefully on their farm despite the Thirty Years' War raging around them. When their father was captured by the Swedish mercenaries who plundered the farm, the three brothers vowed to save him, carving their pact in stone according to a Celtic and Viking tradition.Commissioned by the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Montlebon for its centenary, this work pays tribute to a local story that has become a legend. The conductor, Jean-Pierre Frigo, wanted this commission to mark the orchestra's presence within the region.Duration: 13.15

In commissioning this work, the wind band of Le Portel (France) wanted to pay tribute to the victims of 8 September 1943, when around 100 Allied planes dropped more than 5,000 bombs on the town of Boulogne and the surrounding area. In fact, this operation was nothing more than a diversion to make the enemy believe that a landing was imminent in the north of France. This music is slow, an adagio commemorating the human sacrifice of this operation. But more broadly, the composer also wanted to express his support for the peoples who, even today, suffer oppression.This set includes an optional choir part that offers the possibility of making an even deeper impression on the listener.Duration: 6.15
