OMAGGIO (Novello Symphonic) - Ball, Michael
Score & Parts. Omaggio is a homage to Italy and all things Italian. A brief Burla of a fast-moving scherzo character pays tribute to Verdi. Barcarola is sterner stuff - a grim black gondola evokes the Venice of the Serenissima. The movement is an actual gondola song coupled with the jaunty fanfares of Monteverdi and Gabrieli's Sonata pian'e forte. The most substantial movement is the final Palio, an unashamedly programmatic evocation of the historic Sienese horse-race, ending with a Tuscan folk-song. Duration: 16-18 mins

Waves of the Revolution
O'Loughlin's tribute to New Hampshire's contribution to the Revolutionary War features glorious brass fanfares, blossoming woodwinds and exciting scoring for the percussion section. An aggressive theme in a minor key is the basis for this contest style piece, which is symphonic in nature. Popov's Parade - Duncan Stubbs
Combining references to 20th-century Russian music with slapstick humour, 'Popov's Parade' is a humble tribute to a great international artist, Oleg Popov, one of the world's best-known clowns. The quote from Schubert's March Militaire parodies Stravinsky's use of this same fragment in his own Circus Polka. Suitable for intermediate level (Grade 3/4) Symphonic Wind Band.

Faber Suite - Michele Grassani
Faber is the ancient Latin name that was used to designate artisans. The Suite, which is divided into three movements, pays tribute to them, in the hope that their activities will not completely disappear. The first movement (Maestoso) represents the carpenter who, after completing his creation admires it with satisfaction. The second movement (Adagio) describes the work of the tailor: the first part is more meditative and portrays the use of needle and thread, while the second, characterized by forceful rhythmic strettos, describes the ancient and complex use of the weighted loom. The last movement (Presto), characterized by irregular rhythms and constant changes of tempo, introduces us to a blacksmith's shop full of intense and loud metallic noises.

An Irish Farewell - Larry Daehn
The lovely old tune on which this composition is based is know by a variety of names: "Farewell! But Whenever You Welcome the Hour," "To Rodney We Will Go," and "Moll Roone."The "Andante e rubato" used from the outset of the piece, gives conductors as much freedom as they might desire. Wonderful lyrical writing and a beautiful tribute to that special someone.
