The Colorado Mesa University Wind Symphony, under direction of Dr. Calvin Hofer, has hosted the annual and continually growing Best of the West Music Festival. In 2007, Ewazen was guest composer and commissioned for a new concert band work to celebrate Grand Junction and the towering Grand Mesa that rises above the town. Inspired by this grand landscape, I set out to write a work which was rich, resonant, colorful and bold, a tribute to this amazing scenery which I ultimately had the pleasure of seeing and exploring first hand. In 432 St. Patrick traveled from Scotland to Ireland and within a few years he succeeded in converting the entire Irish population to Christianity. The bishop died on 17th March 461 and in Ireland, as a tribute to this remarkable bishop, this date became a national holiday called St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick's Day, symbolized by the shamrock, is one big party with traditional Irish dancing, parades with highly decorated floats, hundreds of concerts and all kinds of colorful characters on the streets. Bring a touch of Irish magic to any concert with this lively composition.

Yes, with tongue very much in cheek, Michael Story has penned this original novelty to bring more than just a snicker from your audiences. Hear the insect as it approaches (your trumpet section playing on mouthpieces) and a resounding slap as the culprit is sent to greener pastures. Add some visuals from the band as the insect circles, and you have yourself a guaranteed successful concert moment. For you environmentalists: No harmful pesticides are included. Dedicated to the many heroes who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, this David Shaffer composition features an uplifting tone designed as a tribute to the fallen. Full of energy and dynamic contrasts, it includes a host of effective percussion parts that will keep the drummers involved and interested. Symphonic concert work, dedicated to the Bauernkapelle St. Georgen, conductor Johannes Biegler. The concert work "La Citt", which translates as "The City", is a tribute to the district of St. Georgen near Eisenstadt in Austria.The work begins with a majestic introduction in which the main theme is presented. The following Allegro con Spirito. Is intended to symbolize the occupation of the Romans after the birth of Christ. The "St. George's Song", a folk tune arranged in various registers, is heard. Another fast section reminds us once again of the Romans. After a reprise of the opening theme with various solos, the work ends in a grandiose finale with the whole orchestra.

Franco Cesarini has written this piece for concert band as a tribute to the town of Bisacquino (Palermo, Italy) of which he is an honorary citizen. The Suite Siciliana, a 7-movement piece - Intrada, Pavana, Gavotta, Barcarola, Tambourin, Siciliana, Tarantella - is characterised by contrasting rhythms and tempo, and consists of these 7 dances. The musical form, typical of the Baroque period, refers to some traditional expressions of art from the land of Sicily: ranging from the rich architecture of the Sicilian Baroque to the colourful majolica ceramics and the characteristic puppets, the "pupi", which narrate a secular tradition. A full immersion into ancient traditions of this beautiful island! Duration: 16.30

Spirit of Andalusia was commissioned by The Glasgow Wind Band. The brief was to create a fascinating 5-minute opener, however, during the compositional process, the piece started to take the form of a Spanish influenced composition. The composer decided to stick to this involuntary development and started producing a tribute to Spanish music, in particular, Flamenco - which originates from the region of Andalusia.
