Irish Festival - Quincy C. Hilliard
Quincy C. Hilliard uses two Irish folksongs as the inspiration for this new festival work. A drone opens the work which quickly moves to a simple, yet creative setting of The Last Rose of Summer. A slow, lyrical treatment of the same folk song serves as the middle section of the piece. The final section is based on The Rake of Mallow and makes use of ample percussion as the piece propels toward a powerful conclusion.

Here's a marvelous arrangement featuring the engaging sounds of folk music from Sweden. It opens with a brief fanfare followed by In The Summer The Sun Shines So Clearly. After the lovely 3/4 melody Flowers Of Joy, Eric alternateswoodwind and brass choirs on the dignified O Varmland. The lively song My Love Like A Dainty Shepherdess is written in 3/4 for ease of reading, and the medley concludes with a majestic setting of The King. Well scored with plentyof variety.

Let Freedom Ring is an arrangement of the famous song America, also known as My Country Tis of Thee. While information on who and when the actual melody was composed is disputed it is known that the melody was a very well known tune. This setting begins and ends with a bold fanfare that is stately and majestic with snare drum interjections played softly with the melody, as if to represent a marching army from far away. The full band enters on the final statement of the melody for a broad, sustained, and majestic finale.

The concept of transporting oneself back in time through memory has long been the subject of debate and curiosity. A popular song or striking melody can be a key to unlocking distant memories, and for a brief instant create a circle in time. The evocative music of this work appears at times in melodic swirls that seem to float in from the distance as memories sometimes occur. Light but persistent percussion creates a subtle yet unyielding background for wind lines that seem to travel through passageways of sounds as though traveling through time itself.

This piece is based on a Scottish folk song thought to have originated in the Hebrides. Common people in Scotland and Ireland would burn dried peat from the bogs for their hearth fires and gather around to tell tales and dance. The music tells in part of a journey, beginning with a somber and somewhat melancholy melody. It soon takes on a more upbeat feel as the tempo picks up and the mood becomes more uplifting and lively. It presses on to a spirited and bright ending.

Besides 'Happy Hour' and 'Adventure Games', Ennio Salvere wrote this excellent suite for youth band. The first movement 'Good Friends' is a light sounding parade march; the second movement 'Lonely Bird' is rather a lyrical ballad with a slightly swinging accompaniment; the third part 'Rock-A-Cha-cha' brings a fine contrast, whereas the final part 'Spring Song' is a kind of rhythmical folk dance. Skilled conductors might recognize the hand of the master using this new pen name.Also available for strings!

We sail the ocean with stubborn, hardworking but weak hearted Flemish fishermen to the Northern parts of the Atlantic. A sailor is leaving his wife or girlfriend not knowing if he is going to come back soon. Leaving for good fishing grounds around Iceland. This sad song(the first line of the text says; The wind that blows from the east, my love, is not going to blow for ever) is a solo for flugelhorn accompanied by the whole lower brass section. In a certain way of counterpoint tenorhorns, baritones and euphoniums are woven around thesoloist. The warmth from these saxhorn section is coloured by some chords from trombones and a quite virtuosi marimba line.

This impressive composition in three movements describes the travel of the twelve-year-old orphan Willy, sailing as a stowaway on a goods ship from his birthplace Glissmouth to America, in search of a better life. The second movement contains a melancholic song evoking his lost love and the anxiety because of the unknown adventure. At his arrival at Ellis Island near New York, Willy realizes which opportunities for a new and happier life he receives.

Henk van Belcums used the festive and much loved song 'In Thee is Gladness', in this arrangement. Better known as 'Geest van hierboven' (Hymn 477) from the Songs for the Church (NL). A glorious fanfare opens the piece, which is then followed by a bright dance. The hymn is heard in the chorale section, in a fancy new setting, and the piece closes with a reprise of the opening fanfare.
