Rudolf Friml studied composition with Antonin Dvork at the conservatory of music of his native town. He settled in the United States of America in 1906 after having spent already five years in the States as pianist of the violin virtuoso Jan Kubelik. Friml is famous because of a number of his operettas such as 'Rose Marie' (1923) and 'The Vagabond King' (1925). The most popular Donkey Serenade is an extract from his operetta 'The Firefly' (1912). This song was even to become more popular when 'The Firefly' was turned in to the movie picture 'The Castilian Spy' by Robert Leonard in 1937.

The American singer and actress Diana Ross was soloist with the popular female group 'The Supremes' from 1964 to 1969. With the song 'You keep me hanging on' the group was number one in the hitparade for twelve consecutive weeks. In 1970 Ross started a solo career both as singer and actress (Lady sings the Blues 1972). Many of her songs, such as Touch me in the Morning (1972), Love Hangover (1976) and Endless Love (1982) became extremely popular. The famous Dutch bandleader, composer and arranger Pi Scheffer made this splendid arrangement combining some of Ross's successful songs. TRIANAThe twelve part piano composition 'Iberia', published in four volumes between 1906 and 1909, is often considered as the absolute summit of all piano compositions by Albniz. Among those pieces 'Triana' is one of the most popular, not in the least thanks to the splendid orchestration by Fernndez Arbs, who also made famous orches-trations of 'Corpus Christi en Sevilla' (Feast Day in Sevilla), 'Evocacin' (Evocation) and 'El Puerto' (The Harbour).'Triana' evokes the famous suburb separated from the centre of Sevilla by the Guadalquivir river. It combines the rhythms of the 'sevillanas' and the 'rasguedo' (arpeggios) of the guitars with the charm of a melodic song. Juan V. Mas Quiles made this arrangement for symphonic band from the original piano score.
