The Clovis North Educational Center opened its doors in the fall of 2007 as part of the Clovis Unified School District in Fresno, California. Beacon of Polaris was commissioned to honor the first graduating class, their teachers, school and community, in a musical celebration. Unique in its conception and planning for the future, this thrilling and substantial piece serves as a thank-you to the work of those who provided a guiding light and path, a Beacon of Polaris, for the many people who will walk the halls and classrooms in the future.

Insurrection was composed as a potential concert opener for intermediate band. It is a passionate work with driving and relentless motives that possess a nervous energy. The clashing dissonances heard throughout the work represent a clashing against authority as an insurrection is defined. The middle of the composition gives a short reprieve from the intense and driving rhythms of the outer sections of the work while still retaining moments of dissonance and conflict. A transition takes us back to the opening tempo and dissonant material that eventually makes its way to a triumphant coda.

E for Eternity was composed in memory of Nathan Luke Ray, a tubaist who had always dreamed of playing in the Fresno State Bulldog Marching Band. Nathan died in a car accidenton on his way home from realizing that dream - performing at his first game as a Fresno State student, a game nationally televised on ESPN. This piece was written by his teacher; the title came from his classmates, in memory of this vibrant young musician.

A fast, furious yet very playable work meant to conclude concerts in a fun and lighthearted manner. While it sounds impressive and quite demanding, appropriate ranges and wise orchestration make it quite playable at faster tempos. As with most of Gilroys compositions, the percussion section plays an important role as indicated by a galloping rhythm first introduced by a solo woodblock. This fun and energetic work will provide a musical exclamation point to any wind band performance.

Wonders of the Seasons is aptly named, as it combines a variety of well-known Christmas melodies in a variety of styles. Opening with a bold setting of O Come, All Ye Faithful, almost every section of the band is featured with fragments of a number of different Christmas melodies layered on top of one another throughout. Other carols presented are God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Silent Night, with Angels We Have Heard on High closing the work in a regal and majestic manner.

A spirited holiday opener or closer where the composer's love for percussion is proudly evident. Three traditional Christmas tunes are featured, including I Saw Three Ships; Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella and We Three Kings of Orient Are. Each carol is introduced and then combined and overlapped for a rousing effect complete with a crisp percussion transition. An unexpected and lively 7/8 ending brings the work to a thrilling finish that is energetic and intense.

Based on the holiday favorites Jolly Old St. Nicholas and Up on the Housetop with a rousing nod to Joy to the World as the finale, this delightful and engaging arrangement is perfect for a young band's first holiday concert. This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skilful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen.Duration: 3:35

This setting opens with a hearty cadence of snare drums and field drums, followed by the addition of fifes (piccolo and flute). The A section features 'Bonnie Eloise,' a favorite tune of both armies during the Civil War. The B section is original material. The love of Civil War music is evident in this fine arrangement. Very uplifting!
