Windy City Holiday was composed specifically for the Fresno State Wind Orchestra for their performance at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois for the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival. The composer, Gary P. Gilroy, serves as the Director of Bands at Fresno State and conductor of the universitys premiere wind band, the Fresno State Wind Orchestra and Dr. Gilroy wrote this work in honor of the students who raised the funding needed to be a part of the Festival. The group took a five-day trip to Chicago and as such, had a "Holiday" of sorts in the famous Windy City with Dr. Gilroy on his first major trip as the Director of Bands with the Wind Orchestra. The work is one of the more challenging compositions Gilroy has written in some time and he wanted to compose an exciting and energetic opener for this historic concert. He also wanted the work to represent the fun and excitement his students would be exposed to in Chicago so it was important that the opener be playful and light at times.

It is an energetic work which is meant to evoke the spirit of celebration, the beauty of the area, the music camp, and its teachers. Beginning with a brilliant fast section, this is followed by a more serene, introspective section with lyrical lines and soloistic playing in the oboe, horns, and trumpet. Wh then return to the festive tempo for a rousing finale.

Wild Wyatt! was written as the second composition of a two-part series. The first in the series, Sand Castles,was originally titled Sand Castles for Noah, and was written by Dr. Gilroy for his godson, Noah Price. He then decided that it also might be fun to compose a fun tune for Noahs little brother, Wyatt, who is as wild as they come! With his long, wild and blazing red hair, Wyatt is one of the most intense and energetic youngsters the composer has ever known. The result is a concert band work with great passion, intense energy, and wild interruptions, well-suited to be called Wild Wyatt!

Commissioned and premiered by the Solano County Honor Band Association to commemorate their 50th anniversary with the composer conducting. Mysterious samplings from the percussion section open while an American Indian flute presents the first theme. As with other works by Gilroy, the composition explores an extensive variety of percussion timbres to keep the piece interesting and always changing. After the introduction, the spirit of the work changes to a lively and festive dance with constantly changing meters which makes the piece come alive. This then winds down to an Indian lullaby, the simple and pensive melody providing a relaxing and welcome change before a dramatic a return to the original festive dance with a slightly modified setting. The final moments of the work are quite fierce with bold and intense percussion accompanying tight harmonies and complex rhythms for an exciting and driving ending..

The opening and closing sections develop momentum by incorporating shifting time signatures, relentless ostinato passages as well as creative and unpredictable rhythms. This work was commissioned by the Lampasas High School Band, Lampasas, Texas, Richard Hooper, Director, in memory of their classmate and friend, Chris Cruz, and his father and sister. Chris was a saxophone player, Eagle Scout and junior in high school. He was a much-loved member of the high school band and this work was commissioned in honor and memory of him. The title refers to Chris favorite time of the year: the end of summer, band camp, the start of school, the start of fall, football games, band competitions and all the other fun times that come along for high school band students "as the days become shorter." Energetic and driving, much like the life that Chris lived, this work is meant to be a celebration of his life and spirit.
