Windy City Holiday was composed specifically for the Fresno State Wind Orchestra for their performance at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois for the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival. The composer, Gary P. Gilroy, serves as the Director of Bands at Fresno State and conductor of the universitys premiere wind band, the Fresno State Wind Orchestra and Dr. Gilroy wrote this work in honor of the students who raised the funding needed to be a part of the Festival. The group took a five-day trip to Chicago and as such, had a "Holiday" of sorts in the famous Windy City with Dr. Gilroy on his first major trip as the Director of Bands with the Wind Orchestra. The work is one of the more challenging compositions Gilroy has written in some time and he wanted to compose an exciting and energetic opener for this historic concert. He also wanted the work to represent the fun and excitement his students would be exposed to in Chicago so it was important that the opener be playful and light at times.

French Chanson, arranged by Steven J. Pyter, is a rousing arrangement of a famous 16th-century choral work. The tuneful Renaissance art song tells a light-hearted story of gossip and rumor, with lyrics roughly translating to "I will tell you!" The story centers around a jealous husband suspicious of his beautiful wife. Like opera, the piece employs dramatic and whimsical characteristics to tell a passionate story. This arrangement alternates between tutti statements and short interludes to feature each instrument family in the band---woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Commissioned and premiered by the Solano County Honor Band Association to commemorate their 50th anniversary with the composer conducting. Mysterious samplings from the percussion section open while an American Indian flute presents the first theme. As with other works by Gilroy, the composition explores an extensive variety of percussion timbres to keep the piece interesting and always changing. After the introduction, the spirit of the work changes to a lively and festive dance with constantly changing meters which makes the piece come alive. This then winds down to an Indian lullaby, the simple and pensive melody providing a relaxing and welcome change before a dramatic a return to the original festive dance with a slightly modified setting. The final moments of the work are quite fierce with bold and intense percussion accompanying tight harmonies and complex rhythms for an exciting and driving ending..

Appropriately titled, Energetikos is a wildly energetic work that will bring down the house! The opening and closing sections develop momentum by incorporating shifting time signatures, relentless ostinato passages as well as creative and unpredictable rhythms. A lyric middle section is richly scored to produce a warm, calm setting much like the eye of a hurricane before the "storm" returns. Be sure to give this a listen, its a true tour de force that will be long remembered by audiences and performers alike.

Insurrection was composed as a potential concert opener for intermediate band. It is a passionate work with driving and relentless motives that possess a nervous energy. The clashing dissonances heard throughout the work represent a clashing against authority as an insurrection is defined. The middle of the composition gives a short reprieve from the intense and driving rhythms of the outer sections of the work while still retaining moments of dissonance and conflict. A transition takes us back to the opening tempo and dissonant material that eventually makes its way to a triumphant coda.

A fast, furious yet very playable work meant to conclude concerts in a fun and lighthearted manner. While it sounds impressive and quite demanding, appropriate ranges and wise orchestration make it quite playable at faster tempos. As with most of Gilroys compositions, the percussion section plays an important role as indicated by a galloping rhythm first introduced by a solo woodblock. This fun and energetic work will provide a musical exclamation point to any wind band performance.

Wonders of the Seasons is aptly named, as it combines a variety of well-known Christmas melodies in a variety of styles. Opening with a bold setting of O Come, All Ye Faithful, almost every section of the band is featured with fragments of a number of different Christmas melodies layered on top of one another throughout. Other carols presented are God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen and Silent Night, with Angels We Have Heard on High closing the work in a regal and majestic manner.

A spirited holiday opener or closer where the composer's love for percussion is proudly evident. Three traditional Christmas tunes are featured, including I Saw Three Ships; Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabella and We Three Kings of Orient Are. Each carol is introduced and then combined and overlapped for a rousing effect complete with a crisp percussion transition. This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen. (3:35)
