Windy City Holiday was composed specifically for the Fresno State Wind Orchestra for their performance at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, Illinois for the Percy Grainger Wind Band Festival. The composer, Gary P. Gilroy, serves as the Director of Bands at Fresno State and conductor of the universitys premiere wind band, the Fresno State Wind Orchestra and Dr. Gilroy wrote this work in honor of the students who raised the funding needed to be a part of the Festival. The group took a five-day trip to Chicago and as such, had a "Holiday" of sorts in the famous Windy City with Dr. Gilroy on his first major trip as the Director of Bands with the Wind Orchestra. The work is one of the more challenging compositions Gilroy has written in some time and he wanted to compose an exciting and energetic opener for this historic concert. He also wanted the work to represent the fun and excitement his students would be exposed to in Chicago so it was important that the opener be playful and light at times.

French Chanson, arranged by Steven J. Pyter, is a rousing arrangement of a famous 16th-century choral work. The tuneful Renaissance art song tells a light-hearted story of gossip and rumor, with lyrics roughly translating to "I will tell you!" The story centers around a jealous husband suspicious of his beautiful wife. Like opera, the piece employs dramatic and whimsical characteristics to tell a passionate story. This arrangement alternates between tutti statements and short interludes to feature each instrument family in the band---woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Appropriately titled, Energetikos is a wildly energetic work that will bring down the house! The opening and closing sections develop momentum by incorporating shifting time signatures, relentless ostinato passages as well as creative and unpredictable rhythms. A lyric middle section is richly scored to produce a warm, calm setting much like the eye of a hurricane before the "storm" returns. Insurrection was composed as a potential concert opener for intermediate band. It is a passionate work with driving and relentless motives that possess a nervous energy. The clashing dissonances heard throughout the work represent a clashing against authority as an insurrection is defined. The middle of the composition gives a short reprieve from the intense and driving rhythms of the outer sections of the work while still retaining moments of dissonance and conflict. A transition takes us back to the opening tempo and dissonant material that eventually makes its way to a triumphant coda.

This delightful Grainger classic was written to depict a jolly old George Friedrich Handel careening down the Strand (the theatre district of London) accompanied by the English popular music of the day. Given the original instrumentation and label as a chamber piece in Grainger's original publication, this transcription is taken directly from Grainger's "four-some" edition of 1912, transposed down a step from G to F major. It is scored to best depict the light (and sometimes percussive) quality of the piano along with the lyrical flow of the strings and the general character of chamber music. Ultimately, the "room music" quality of the original shines through in this skillful transcription while depicting the spirit of the piece in a way that Grainger might have chosen. (3:35)

Gilroy composed this festive work to commemorate the Twentieth Anniversary of the Lake Sequoia Symphonic Music Camp. It is an energetic work which is meant to evoke the spirit of celebration, the beauty of the area, the music camp, and its teachers. Beginning with a brilliant fast section, this is followed by a more serene, introspective section with lyrical lines and soloistic playing in the oboe, horns, and trumpet. Wh then return to the festive tempo for a rousing finale.
