Cryptogram - Kit Turnbull
Cryptogram (krip-to-gram): anything written in cipher. Cipher (si'fer): a secret code.Commissioned for the 50th Birthday of Paul Patterson, the composer has taken the letters P, A, U and L and adapted their Morse Code dots and dashes as a basis for the piece. Combinations of rich brass writing, juxtaposed with florid upper wind writing, provides a stimulating piece for an intermediate level band. The finale to the work superimposes both elements for a grand ending.

£164.95Elgar Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin
The year 2007 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the British composer Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) and as such I thought it an appropriate moment to write something in tribute to this event. There are quite a few enigmas about this piece and they are all intentional! First and foremost is that the variations are not constructed on any of Elgar's actual themes. Rather I have written a sequence of contrasting sections (all played without a break) on the essence and character of his musical style. I have also written this work with bands, the soloists within, conductors and, not least, their audience firmly in mind. The language is essentially tonal and the test musical rather than overtly technical. There are no tempo indications other than suggested metronome marks. I have deliberately kept things to a minimum as the true test here is to find the style and interpret that aspect over the whole structure. Whereas the faster sections are more or less self explanatory the slower parts require deliberate rubato and much feeling. This is for the conductors to discover and I encourage them to do so. Adjudicators should be fully aware that I sanction this aspect but it requires an insight and understanding to successfully execute so 'any old thing' will not suffice! The 'variation' commencing at rehearsal letter P is the emotional core of the piece and requires a passionate but not saccharine approach to pacing and sensuality. The cadenza type material is built into the process rather than being a separate sequence of entities. There are many allusions to the music of Elgar here without recourse to blatant pastiche - if it is thought of as a series of songs and dances this may help. The final comment is the dedication, after one of Elgar's own but subtly adjusted: to my friend pictured within - never to be revealed - now there's an enigma!- Martin EllerbyDuration: 14.00Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM155D Scenes from Childhood (Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.15), Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra

£83.00Battle Hymn of the Republic - William Steffe
Made popular by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Grammy winning performance in 1959, Peter Wilhousky's famous arrangement of Battle Hymn of the Republic has remained a staple to this day. In this Critical Edition for Band edited by Justin P. Tokke, a new arrangement has been crafted based on Wilhousky's original orchestral scoring. To enhance playability, generous cross-cuing and doubling of the choral parts have been applied in cases where the band version is played without voices. This new arrangement ensures complete compatibility with both the choral and orchestral versions, with matching measure numbers and rehearsal marks, and comes complete with a full score and parts produced with modern engraving standards. This exciting edition is ready to continue Wilhousky's legacy and hopes to inspire future collaboration and new performance opportunities.

£60.99The Willow Tree (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ni Uallachain, Padraigin - Sweeney, Michael
Although this haunting tune has the flavor and sentiment of a traditional Irish folk song, it was composed in 1995 by multifaceted artist P?draig?n N? Uallach?in. Her inspiration for the song was the idea that when we are happy or sad, the elements and the natural world are aligned with our feelings. From the wistful lyrics of the song; "Down by the river there's a tall willow tree, who weeps all night for you and me." This evocative setting for band follows this sentiment through peaks and valleys of sound and emotion. Duration: 3:15

The "Crystal Hill" is the nickname for New Hampshire's Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeastern USA. Its weather is notoriously fickle, and the world's highest wind speed of 231 m.p.h. was recorded there in 1934. Composer Brad Ciechomski paints a vivid portrait characterizing a climb up the mountain. Soaring melodies and exuberant rhythms depict and intrepid trek.
