From the moment my Johan de Meij and his wife settled in 2008 in Saugerties, a quaint Hudson Valley town 100 miles north of Manhattan, he started immersing himself into the area's rich musical history. Discovering a fascinating mix of American, Irish and Scottish folk music, ultimately, it was not easy to choose from such abundance. These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area which provides great extremes in the geography and the people.'Shelter Island' is a small island situated almost atthe end of Long Island, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap but in the winter it is gloriously deserted, and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in seamists and driving rain. In upstate New York lie 'The Catskills' Mountains, an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again.New York - or to be moreprecise,Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this 'picture' needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked, here is a small foretaste of things to come!

Gauthier Dupertuis wrote Anemoia as part of his master's thesis at the Lausanne University of Music. It is dedicated to the most significant figure in his musical life: his teacher Jean-Claude Kolly.Anemoia is the name given to the feeling of nostalgia that one feels for a time that has never known. This emotion often translates into the uneasy sensation of having lost something important or of not living at the right place or time. Fascinated by this concept, Gauthier Dupertuis tried to translate it into music oscillating between exaltation, anguish and nostalgia.The piece is formed by two movements: (Un)desired sorrow and Behind the glass of time. The first movement initially evokes the feeling of unease one feels when suddenly struck by anemoia. It then evolves into majestic atmospheres, marking our admiration for times gone by. The second movement treats anemoia in a more melancholic way.The premiere took place on 6th December 2024, during Jean-Claude Kolly's last concert as a conductor of the Concordia de Fribourg, marking thirty years spent conducting this wind orchestra.

"Heaven in My Arms" is a beautiful melody by Carola Hggkvist with lyrics by Erik Hillestad.This version is without vocal soloist so the melody is spread into many parts throughout the arrangement.(There are cue notes for oboe and bassoon, where they have soloistic elements.)To the conductor:Strive for good flow and phrasing. Feel free to be a bit creative with the phrasing. It invites for two-bar phrases in the melody, but perhaps 2/2/4 could also work nicely.Balance is very important. Often there is both melody and obligato/countermelody in addition to harmonic elements. Let each of them have their own layer in the balance.Staccato effects in clarinets and marimba are intended as pizzicato effects and must be phrased. Not too static.The tutti section at 72 can be energetic with intense lines. Maybe a little pi mosso as well. Think big and orchestral with good resonance and timbre.- Reid Gilje -

"In Flanders Fields" is a play recounting the Battle of Vimy Ridge (France) which took place from April 9 to 12, 1917. The introduction refers to the thousands of graves found at the site of Notre-Dame de Lorette. Then begins the episode of preparation and fierce battle. Thanks to the Canadian Expeditionary Force that came as reinforcements, the battle was won and the site secured at 6 a.m. (brass choir accompanied by 6 bells). The title of this work also refers to a poem by John Mac Rae located at the entrance to the memorial museum."In Flanders Fields"By Col. This arrangement was written for Norwegian School Band Madlamark Skolekorps to their participation at the Norwegian Championships 2023.The arrangement will work excellent also for a wind ensemble (one player to each part), but the clarinet parts should always be doubled.Euphonium II is optional, but it's recommended to use also this when there are two players or more on this instrument. Concerning percussion, timpani is the most important part, but it's recommended to also cover cymbals and mallet percussion.The articulation and dynamics are kept as close as possible to the original version by Dvorak. However, some changes has been made to make it more suitable for a wind instrumentation. The timpani part is identical to the original version except for some places when the trumpet signals are doubled in the timpani part.Staccato notation should not be played short here, but rather separated. At faster passages, the music should be played endurant or legato if possible.This arrangement is a good opportunity to perform music of highest quality where musicality, phrasing, balance and intonation are very important, and, where each musician and part are deeply involved in the music making.

The Eagle's Quest was commissioned by Brevik Musikkorps (Norway) to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Cort Adeler, a renowned Norwegian-Dutch sailor who was born in the town of Brevik in 1622. His Dutch name Adelaer means 'eagle'. This work celebrates his life but is not programmatic, simply reflecting Brevik's pride in one of its most famous sons. Towards the end of the piece there is a brief quotation from the town song, Brevikssangen, which is a fitting and captivating conclusion.
