Bread and Games - William Vean
'Panem et Circenses', Bread and Games were essential for keeping the citizens of ancient Rome in check. While the bread was meant for the poorest among the Romans, the Games were Popular Pastime Number One for everybody. There were different kinds of games, such as chariot races (especially popular with female spectators), or wild-beast fights, where lions, tigers, bulls or bears were set on one another or even on human beings. Most popular, however, were the Gladiator fights. In 'Bread and Games' William Vean depicts one of the many fights in the antique Colosseum. 1. Entrance of the Gladiators: By powerful bugle-calls the attention of the peoplewas asked for, after which the Gladiators entered the Arena at the sound of heroic marching-music.2.Swordfight: We can hear that the fights were not mere child's play in this part.On the contrary, they were a matter of life and death and were fought accordingly.3.Mercy of the Emperor: Sometimes a wounded gladiator could be fortunate, depending on the mercy of the audience. Waving one's handkerchief meant mercy, a turned-down thumb meant no pardon. The Emperor had the right to take the final decision, but he usually complied with the wish of the majority of the public. 4.Lap of Honour: Gladiators were mainly selected among slaves, convicted criminals, or prisoners of war. Consequently, winning was very important, as it would mean fame, honour and sometimes even wealth. A lap of honour, therefore, was the winner's due reward.

Captain Blood's Quickstep
A great many marches were composed during the Civil War, and Captain Blood's Quickstep, from the book of 1st Brigade Band, is an example of a tribute to a particular individual. While it's quite possible that Edwin Oscar Kimberley (director of the 1st Brigade Band) was the composer, no name appears on the manuscript and the true authorship of this distinctive march remains a mystery yet today. Regardless the origin, Captain Blood's Quickstep is an effective and entertaining way to capture the flavor of this important period of our nation's history.

East Coast Pictures - Nigel Hess
These three short 'pictures' were inspired by several visits to a small part of the American East Coast, an area which provides great extremes in the geography and the people.'Shelter Island' is a small island situated almost atthe end of Long Island, a few hours drive east of New York. In the summer it becomes a crowded tourist trap but in the winter it is gloriously deserted, and bravely faces the onslaught of the turbulent Atlantic, shrouded in seamists and driving rain. In upstate New York lie 'The Catskills' Mountains, an extraordinary combination of tranquillity and power, peace and majesty. Once seen they call you back again and again.New York - or to be moreprecise,Manhattan. For anyone who is familiar with this bizarre and wonderful city, this 'picture' needs no explanation. For those not yet hooked, here is a small foretaste of things to come!

Paseo (Oboe Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
Paseo is a Spanish word for a leisurely walk or stroll. The soloist takes the musical line for a walk with no great sense of hurry. There is one moment where the pleasantness of the stroll is threatened but it quickly passes and the good mood is resumed. Technically this needs a good sense of cantabile and control over the range from low D to D two octaves higher. In order to allow the oboe soloist to sing through without fighting the accompaniment, the saxophones, trumpets and percussion have been omitted.Duration: 4.15

In the Air (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oswald, Gerald
The composition is upbeat, dynamic, and the notes dance. There is no story to tell, but simply a mood of cheerfulness and levity. In the Air expresses a consistently joyful, light-hearted and positive vibe through its mischievously playful motifs; the music blows through as if a light breeze, a fresh wind. Gerald Oswald was born in 1968 in Gross-St. Florian. He completed his education as a trumpeter at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He further pursued studies in conducting and composition under Franz Cibulka at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory in Graz, Thomas Doss at the Music and Arts Private University of Vienna, the Music School Leonding, and the C.
