Sir Dirk Bross, music director at the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra, is a versatile composer of orchestral and symphonic repertoire, chamber music, film & musical. His compositions are performed worldwide by the most prominent orchestras and soloists. About the new series of 10 "Musical Postcards" for wind band, Dirk says the following: "Composing is a commitment; it is my life's mission. For me composing means creating a vacuum around myself and allowing myself to be submerged by impressions. It is a continual struggle between fantasy and reality, between dream and reality. Out of chaos of sounds and emotions I try to order my thoughts by juggling shreds of melodies, original chords, striking sound colours and alternating rhythms. Melody, harmony, rhythm and sound colours are finally balanced to generate a harmonious universe. This series of ten 'Musical Postcards' are a reflection of my travels, thoughts, discoveries and musical career so far, which has brought me around the globe. £86.80Wild Horses - Geert Schrijvers
This short, descriptive work was composed to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the dutch wind ensemble 'Vakantieorkest Ad Hoc', on their tour to the south of France. The work is a reference to the accommodation where the orchestra has often stayed. 'Wild Horses' is an rip-roaring composition, which brings forth images of the sometimes harsh and exciting world of the Wild West. This work is also a tribute to one of the most influential film score composers of all time: Ennio Morricone. The trampling of the wild stallions, the expansive wasteland and the exquistie beauty of the prairie at sunset form the main inspiration sources for this spectacular work.

£38.20Vimy Ridge - T. Bidgood
The British composer Thomas Bidgood (1870-1925) was a gifted music teacher who conducted his own professional orchestra, several theatre orchestras and wind bands. He composed a lot of light orchestral music and some fifteen marches, mong which 'Sons of the Brave' and Vimy Ridge'. The title of this march refers to a ridge situated between the town of Arras and the Flemish plain in the North of France. This ridge has been assaulted numerous times since the Roman conquest. Bidgood wrote this march after the Battle of Arras in April 1917 when the Canadians conquered Vimy Ridge which was one of the strongest fortified positions of the Hindenburg Line.

Anniversary Overture was commissioned in 1968 as a twenty-first birthday piece for Hong Kong Philharmonic Society, and is a four-minute firework display for orchestra. Within the framework of a two-four Allegro giubiloso,Arnold alternates two major themes, one breezy, the other tender, developing them extensively and landing resoundingly in F major. This new transcription brings an exuberant work to the field of symphonic wind band for the firsttime.

£104.50Adagio Solo Euphonium and Winds - Woldemar Bargiel
The German composer Woldemar Bargiel was the half-brother of Clara Schumann and composed a significant amount of chamber music. He was supported by fellow composers Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. His Adagio, opus 38 for cello and orchestra is an eloquently beautiful solo work and makes a very attractive solo feature for euphonium with wind accompaniment. This setting was premiered with euphonium soloist Misa Meade accompanied by the Loyola University Concert Band.

£116.40Little Suite No. 1 - Malcolm Arnold
Sir Malcolm Arnold (1921) put an end to his career as leading trumpeter with several famous London symphony orchestras to become a full-time composer. He became world famous with his soundtrack music for 'The Bridge over the River Kwai', but he composed a lot of orchestral, vocal, ballet and chamber music. He wrote several works for wind band and for brass band, such as three 'Little Suites for Brassband'. The 'Little Suite Number 1' Opus 53 for orchestra (followed by the Second Opus 78) consists of a 'Prelude' (Maestoso), a 'Dance' (Allegretto) and a well-known 'March' (Allegro con brio). The march is still on the concert repertoire of many British military bands.

£61.00Kol Nidrei - Max Bruch
The German composer Max Bruch was born in 1838 and died in 1920. Shortly after his arrival in Britain in 1880, where he had been appointed musical director of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society, he composed Kol Nidrei. This work was written for the Jewish community of Liverpool. Next to the Violin Concerto Nr.1, Kol Nidrei is Bruch's most popular and most often performed composition. It is based on an old Hebraic tune sung on the Great Reconciliation Day and was originally composed for cello and orchestra. This arrangement is a free adaptation for wind band.

£140.80Cinquantieme - Serge Lancen
Cinquantieme, the fiftieth composition for symphonic band by Serge Lancen, was composed in the fall of 1993. It is written in an overture form and built on four distinct themes. First there is a merry and dynamic March, followed by a Waltz of the same character; then comes a small melody and finally the March turns up again, but this time it ends with a triumphant theme. The overture is dedicated to Alain Thiery and his Symphonic Band of Pont-Ste-Marie/La-vau/Creney. It was premiered during the gala concert closing the 120th anniversary celebrations of that band. The number in the title 'Cinquantieme' (Fiftieth), indicates the richness of Lancen's wind band repertoire. Fascinated by the symphonic band's extremely rich range of tone colours, Lancen has devoted all his talent and passion to it. For this type of orchestra he has written symphonies, rhapsodies, several concertos and even religious compositions with choirs and soloists.

In the 1970s Elvis Presley gave many concerts with an orchestra that included a large wind and brass section. These concerts were characterised by enthusiasm and a fast tempo. Suspicious Minds was an up-tempo song in which the drummer played a particularly important role. This arrangement features a relatively calm central section followed by a closing section which will have the audience rocking along!
