    Eastbound (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waespi, Oliver

    Eastbound was commissioned by the Siena Wind Orchestra of Tokyo and may be heard as a sort of urban exploration. It begins with a massive chordal progression verging into a compact, groove-driven exposition of a relatively basic motif, going on to become increasingly virtuosic and hectic, reflecting the ever-present hustle and bustle in the streets of a megalopolis. The subsequent slower section brings about an Edenic atmosphere. Some soloists are featured with expressive lines, building up towards a short climax with a blues flavour, leading back to the fast music of the beginning. The heavily scored chords of the beginning reappear only towards the ending of the piece, like pillars of the musical bridge spanning the entire piece. Another acceleration finally leads to a turbulent close. Duration: 8.15

    Psyche et Eros (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Franck, Cesar - Cesarini, Franco

    Cesar Franck, composer, pianist, organist and music teacher, completed Cupid and Psyche, his sixth and last symphonic poem in 1887. It was first performed in Paris in 1888 and was a complete success, but the piece later fell completely into oblivion, and it was only thanks to some meticulous research that it has returned to concert halls. The intricate love affair between Psyche and Cupid is an original story of the Metamorphoses, written in the 2nd century AD by Apuleius. The tale is about overcoming obstacles in love and their final union. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts and calls for a choir. The movement that is the subject of this arrangement, Psyche et Eros, is positioned at the end of the second part. Franco Cesarini's version for wind orchestra carefully illustrates the nuances of the instrumental colours, and represents a real test aimed at demonstrating the musicality and interpretative skills of orchestras and their conductors.     Cleopatra (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Deleruyelle, Thierry

    The Last Queen of Egypt. Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity's best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remains a mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises the Roman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra's femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love that Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third and last section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of the jealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar's son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his own life. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History's most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directed by Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary. Duration: 10.00

    60 Warm-Up Chorales (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco

    During his experience as a band conductor and teacher of wind orchestra conducting at university, Franco Cesarini has dealt with the topic of warm-ups very frequently. Throughout these long years of conducting he has had the opportunity to try many existing methods, evaluating their advantages and disadvantages. After a long time, he has decided to compile a collection of chorales for warm-ups, which are organised according to the criteria that he considers most effective. While working on his60 Warm-up Chorales for Concert Band, Franco Cesarini has always borne in mind that amateur musicians play for pleasure. He feels that it is extremely important that they have satisfaction at every moment of the rehearsal and not to start the rehearsal with needless "punishing" exercises. Nobody is really motivated to start playing with scales, long notes, or tricky rhythmical exercises. There is often a distinguished absentee in band rehearsals, namely music itself! Although this publication does not foresee a specific tempo for the chorales, they should often be performed rather slowly but without dragging. Dynamics are not indicated, so that the conductor has the opportunity to draw the attention of the musicians to his gestures and to make them react according to his indications. Timpani and bell parts have been added with the aim of not leaving the percussionists completely inactive during the warm-up phase, but can also be omitted. The chorales are written in four parts (SATB) and are also playable in smaller groups. The four voices can be played in different combinations of woodwinds or brass quartets or in mixed combinations. The collection includes ten chorales for the following keys: D flat major, A flat major, E flat major, B flat major, F major and C major. With his 60 Warm-up Chorales Franco Cesarini would like to convey the message to play the chorales in a musical way, thus raising the musicians' awareness of phrasing, the right interpretation of cadences, rubato and agogic.     Eternal Friendship (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Yagisawa, Satoshi

    This work is a close-up of the encounters and relationships of trust between people, following the idea that friendship lasts forever. After the passing of Satoshi Yagisawa's close friend and work partner, Tsutomu Murata, a designer of Neo Create in August 2020, the composer began work on this piece. Murata performed music for audiences primarily as a leader and conductor of Kurume City Brass, a group which is active in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. Eternal Frienship depicts a five-minute chorale which explores how music can convey that a close friend is indispensable to you, more broadly, everyone to someone, much like how Murata conveyed the appeal of music to his audiences. Under the direction of the composer himself, the work had its world premiere and was recorded with the Kobe College Wind Orchestra. Duration: 5.30

Tolkien, with his spectacular Symphony No. 5 Return to Middle Earth. Although there are thematic reminiscences of his monumental first Symphony The Lord of the Rings from 1988, De Meij is putting a completely different musical vibe into his new symphony. There is an important role for a solo soprano and mixed choir: they sing in Ilkorin, one of the Elvish languages of Middle-Earth. The Orcs and other thugs also take the stage, but they only use raw screams in their own language, also known as black speech.

    This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect! Duration: 9.45

    Ponte Vecchio (Trumpet, Alto Sax or Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Yagisawa, Satoshi

    This work was commissioned by the Osaka Kyoiku University Wind Orchestra. The world premiere took place with trumpet soloist, Osamu Kumashiro and was conducted by the composer, who was inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) during a visit to Florence. The solo part can also be performed on euphonium or alto saxophone.

    Fiesta (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Anderson, Keiron

    This piece is a celebration and can be played at any happy occasion. It was written to celebrate 30 years of the Nottingham Symphonic Wind Orchestra in 2017. The music grows from syncopated rhythms and a five note motif which is use to form melody and chords. There is a strong rhythmic undercurrent in percussion and in the interplay between sections. The motif is clearly heard in the flutes and clarinets in an imitative section before the key changes to form a second theme on the oboe then the flute. These secondary themes are still formed from the original motif before the music recapitulates the multi time signatures from earlier in the piece. The relentless pace drives the music to a flourish of upper woodwind and a syncopated brass coda. Duration: 4.30

    Clair de Lune (from Suite Bergamasque) (Trombone or Alto Saxophone Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Debussy, Claude - De Meij, Johan

    Clair de Lune was originally written for piano, as the 3rd movement of the Suite Bergamasque by French composer Claude Debussy. This arrangement for trombone and wind orchestra was written at the request of Joe Alessi, principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic and internationally renowned soloist. There is an alternative solo part included for alto saxophone.
