£104.70Forza Del Destino (Stal - Giuseppe Verdi
The great Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901) was largely self-taught. He composed some operas but then in less than two years' time he lost his wife and two children (1838-1840) and decided to give up composing. However he was convinced to write again and in 1842 he became world famous with his opera 'Nabucco'. This was followed by several masterpieces such as Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, Un ballo in maschera, Aida, Othello and Falstaff. His twenty-fourth opera 'La Forza del Destino' was composed in 1862 for a performance at the Imperial Theatre of Saint Petersburg. This four act opera was written to a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the Spanish tragedy 'Don Alvaro' written in 1835 by Don Angelo Prez de Saavedra, Duke of Rivas. It tells the adventures of the unfortunate Alvaro in Italy and Spain in the middle of the eighteenth century. The love between Leonore and the half-breed of Inca descent Don Alvaro meets a lot of obstacles. One year after the creation in Russia, the opera was performed in Rome under the title 'Don Alvaro'. For the performance at the Scala in Milan in 1869, Verdi transformed the opera and also extended the original prelude into the now popular overture. This overture boasts the best-known melodies as well as the famous three-chord theme and is one of the best-structured overtures by Verdi. It opens with an ominous warning note of the trumpet, introducing a dramatic theme in a minor key. The second theme, taken from the Prayer to the Virgin in Act II, is a noble melody in B major. A gentle pastoral melody forms a contrast to this, and the material of the three principal themes is worked up into a brilliant climax.

The theme from the Western Midnight Cowboy composed by John Barry is widely known in the version for mouth-organ. In this arrangement for symphonic windband and fanfare orchestra arranger Johan de Meij has chosen for a combined solo for alto-sax and trumpet with an orchestral background. The two soloists play the theme which is emellished by the other. The orchestra mainly finds its task in the accompaniment.

This is the third part of the five-part suite 'Nomenclatura' commissioned by the Dutch Customs Band 'Douane Harmonie Nederland' for the band's performance at The Light Music Festival in Sankt Gallen, Switzerland. Funky music is derived from the East Coast or hard bop style. Peter Kleine Schaars has something with Funk music as he wrote already some pieces inspired by that style, such as 'Funky Fugue meets Waddle Waltz'. This is a rhythmic piece of music that will charm both young musicians and listeners. The theme is presented by trumpet, trombone and saxes and then developed by various instrument groups and via some fine solo work.

A fine swinging typical big band number with a powerful rhythmical and melodic percussion and also the electrical bass guitar. A piece that will turn you on and give you a mind to start dancing. The saxophone and the trumpet do some nice solo work. Peter Feigel, conductor of the Berlin Police Band made this fine orchestration.

£140.80Decennium - Eric Swiggers
'Decennium' was composed in 2003 as a commission by the municipality of Berheze for its tenth anniversary. The composition describes the history of this town in the Province of Brabant, consisting of 6 different villages: Heesch, Heeswijk, Dinther, Nistelrode, Loosbroek and Vorstenbosch. The composition starts with a slow introduction, Adagio Misterioso, suggesting the atmosphere in long-ago days when the area consisted mainly of swamps, meres and low woods. (The word 'Bern' is a synonym of 'Born' meaning source or water, whereas 'Hese' is derived from 'Haisjo' meaning brushwood ). Above the dark sounds we hear far away trumpet signals announcing the Middle Ages. After a piercing crescendo, we hear the full sound of festive trumpets. A medieval dance, as was to be heard in the Heeswijk castle, follows. This dance gets a more and more stirring character and finally turns into a merry popular dance ending with a burst of laughter reproduced by descending scales with the muted trombones and trumpets. A slow transition with a quotation from a Gregorian plainsong (Domine Deus) and church bell ringing, referring to the Abbey of Berne, brings us to a romantic Larghetto. This part describes the quiet rural life in a beautiful natural surrounding. The last dying note contrasts with the threatening ostinato, referring to the rise of the industrialization, which provoked quite some resistance with the local people. Once more we hear the 'Domine Deus' but much more powerful this time. When the resistance calms down, the work concludes with an Alla Marcia. The first notes of the main theme could be heard all through the composition and now we hear the complete main theme again. The new town is born. A festive conclusion refers both to the tenth anniversary and the optimism and confidence as to the future.

This little modern suite by Ennio Salvere is an easy but most pleasant concert piece for youth band. The three parts 'Give me some Funk', 'Give me some Blues' and 'Give me some Soul' allow young musicians, notwithstanding a limited strength, to perform a concert piece with contemporary popular rhythms. The slow blues is a nice contrast to the funky introduction, whereas the final movement introduced by a slow lyrical trumpet solo will set fire to the audience and invite them to clap hands as well.also available for strings!

Cry Me A River is an American standard, written by Arthur Hamilton in 1953, and in the first instance made known by Julie London's performance. Cry Me A River was also the opening track on the CD 'Crazy Love' by Michael Bubl. He turned it into a swinging big band arrangement, with a James Bond type feel. This arrangement was originally written for Harmony Band with solo voice but is also available for alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, baritone or trombone

A Time There Was, was composed after being commissioned by the Trumpet Corps of the Royal Dutch Military Police. The piece is chorale like in character and was initially intended for memorial like concerts. It is also suitable as a quiet interlude in your concert. At the end of the piece the opening of the Dutch hymn "Hours, Days, Months, Years" is quoted, referring to the transient nature of existence.

Dunkirk is a French city that served as a backdrop for the Allied military operation between May and June 1940. Known as Operation Dynamo, it consisted of the evacuation of Allied troops that had been encircled by the Nazi German army during the Battle of Dunkirk in full invasion of France. Almost the entire British Expeditionary Force, part of the Belgian army andthree units of the French army had to evacuate the beaches and the port of Dunkirk before the German offensive. In spite of the bombings and the cornered by the German military, they were able to rescue more than 300, 000 soldiers. Jos Alberto Pina has tried to reflect the most dramatic moments of this operation. The composition is divided into small sections. It beginswith ''The Prologue'' where the main theme of Dunkirk appears, followed by ''The mole, the beach'', where the long wait was taking over the soldiers. In ''The bombers'' you can hear how little by little these planes were getting closer to take a nosedive and destroy the lives of the soldiers. ''The Dunkirk Spirit'' is a term in the British press that refers to the solidarity of the Britishpeople as they played a fundamental role, using small boats to get close to the beach and help with the transfer of soldiers. ''The Failed Evacuation'' is related to how the soldiers try to survive while trying to climb the big ships, but the bombers end up sinking without the possibility of surviving. In ''The Hymn'', the melody of the beginning of the work is listening again onthe trumpet, now developed throughout the orchestra and with great lyricism and nobility to finish with ''The Successful Evacuation'', where the full orchestra along with the drums will put a spectacular ending to this fantastic composition by Jos Alberto Pina.
