North Hills Fantasy (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

North Hills Fantasy was commissioned by the North Hills High School Bands, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (director: Len Lavelle) as part of a commissioning programme that has run since 1965 - the longest of its kind in the USA. The work opens with a reflective, unaccompanied solo for alto saxophone which develops into a chorale for horns and saxes. This is taken up by the trumpets and subsides to a change of key and mood, with highly decorated folk-like solos for clarinet, bassoon and saxes. These solos build to a climax for full band, which heralds a triumphant return of the horn chorale, accompanied by florid woodwind figuration. But the mood soon winds down; fragments of earlier melodies return calmly to peacefully close the work. Duration: 5.30

Mercury Rising (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close. Monsters, Unite! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dugger, Kelly

Monsters, Unite! by Kelly Dugger is a fun beginning band piece that is sure to be a hit, not only at Halloween time but all year round. Monsters all around the world are waking up to a calling to unite. Some are big, hairy creatures, and others are delicate and fairy-like. They walk and fly long distances to find each other. In the end, they all come together, marching as one. Just when you think they've marched off into the distance, they come together to surprise the audience. Unique percussion effects, timpani glissando and theremin (or flexatone) add to the spooky sound. A tuba solo at the end is followed by a surprising scream that will leave the performers and the audience giggling! Duration: 1.30

March of the Robot Army (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin and Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by Just Italia. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8 to 18 year olds which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was science fiction, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromatic figures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change of key introduces a legato trio melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting the first two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.Duration: 5.00
