Shamadan Dance (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas
The Shamadan is an old oriental folk dance full of symbolism in which a female dancer, often on the occasion of a wedding, balances a candelabra on her head as a token of spiritual light. In this work, the euphonium takes up the role of the dancer. At the very beginning, the soloist already has the opportunity to shine in an unaccompanied recitative. Next, the soloist and band alternate, and in the course of the work the band also plays an important part with various technical highlights. More variation is created with a solo passage accompanied by percussion and hand claps, culminating beautifully in a grand tutti towards the end of the piece. Challenging music with much to enjoy! Fanfare for an Occasion (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Fanfare for an Occasion was written to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Anglo Music Press, the publishing company dedicated to the works of British composer, Philip Sparke. It is a bright and festive work in which the main theme starts on the tenor instruments of the band before appearing as canonical imitation by all sections in turn. A short, repeated bridge passage leads to a second theme on the saxes that is taken up by the full band and leads back to a return of the main theme and a repeat of the second subject, which brings the fanfare to a brilliant close. Mercury Rising (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Mercury Rising was commissioned by sinfonisches blasorchester wehdel and its conductor Thomas Ratzek, to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018. They premiered this piece in their half-century concert on 2nd November 2018 in the Bremerhaven Stadttheater in Germany. Designed as a virtuosic and lively opener, Mercury Rising opens with nervous energy and driving, syncopated rhythms in a blaze of colour. The horns and saxophones then introduce a broad melody, which the trumpets subsequently take up after a change of tonality. A quieter moment introduces a distant fanfare on muted horns over bubbling semiquavers in the low clarinets. This is interrupted by a passionate tenor melody but soon returns on the full brass section, accompanied by echoes of the opening woodwind figuration, and is extended to bring the piece to a triumphant close. Froissart (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Elgar, Edward - Noble, Paul
Froissart, Op. 19, is a concert overture by Edward Elgar, inspired by the 14th-century Chronicles of Jean Froissart. Elgar was first attracted to the Chronicles after finding mention of them in Walter Scott's Old Mortality. Jean Froissart (c. 1337 - c.1405), often referred to in English as John Froissart, was a medieval French chronicle writer. For centuries, Froissart's Chronicles have been recognized as the chief expression of the chivalric revival of the 14th century Kingdom of England and France. The motto written by Elgar on the manuscript score is a quotation from an 1817 poem by Keats: 'When Chivalry lifted up her lance on high.' Froissart is not a programmatic work: unlike the later Falstaff or even Cockaigne it does not tell a detailed story; it evokes a mood and manner in broad terms. The drama of the dynamics enhances the haunting melodies that identify Elgar's compositions.
