£256.99Clarinet Concerto (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Clarinet soloist Linda Merrick is a long-time friend of the composer Philip Sparke and is married to fellow composer, Martin Ellerby. As part of a dynamic and forward-looking PhD thesis on works for clarinet and concert band, Linda has researched the existing repertoire in addition to commissioning several new concerti from leading British composers, including Martin Ellerby and Nigel Clarke.The original concept was for a suite of short movements, each with its own character, but by the time the first movement was complete, it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better.The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores initially the chalumeau register of the clarinet in a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bee-bop in style and shows off the jazzier side of the clarinet.Duration: 14.00

David Maslanka's Traveler, for Symphonic Wind ensemble, was commissioned in 2003 by the University of Texas at Arlington Band Alumni Association, the Delta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Gamma Nu Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma, in honor of the career contributions of Ray C. Lichtenwalter, retiring Director of bands at UT Arlington. Maslanka writes, "Ray has been a close friend and champion of my music for many years, and it was a great pleasure for me to write this piece for his final concert. The idea for Traveler came from the feeling of a big life movement as I contemplated my friend's retirement." Carl Fischer Music is excited to make this beautifully contemplative piece available to wind ensembles everywhere.

Uniting the traditional Woodwind and Brass Quintets into a ten-player performing group, the Alfred Reed has treated the various combinations possible with this instrumentation in various ways: sometimes just a Woodwind Quintet, then the Brass Quintet, and frequently both groups together as a kind of "mini-wind ensemble." Then, too, the many smaller combinations of two to nine players are exploited to the fullest in order to create continual, and sometimes surprising, changes of instrumental color. Salutation was commissioned by Japanese conductor and broadcaster, Yutaka Nishida, a dear friend of the composer Philip Sparke. Salutation follows fairly conventional march form. A short fanfare introduces the main theme, played by clarinets and saxophones. A bridge passage, mainly in the brass, heralds a change of key and a legato second subject, again played initially by the clarinets, which leads to the conventional trio theme, which is then repeated by the full band. Sections of the second subject lead back to the home key and a return of the main theme, embellished with woodwinds.

Wedding March is, as the name suggests, a festive composition that the composer wrote for the wedding of a good friend. Performed at the 2008 Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, this piece clearly reflects influences ofMendelssohn and Elgar. It is written in a festive setting, but a beautiful cantabile trio, that is very characteristic of the works of Jan van der Roost, is wonderfully included. UNO-Marsch - Robert Stolz
In the 1960's, Austrian composer Robert Stolz (1880-1975) wrote the "UNO-Marsch" op. 1275, the United Nations March. He was inspired and motivated by his friend Ralph Bunche, a U.S. diplomat and civil rights activist. Even as an adolescent, African-American Bunche was concerned with race issues and repression. With time he acquired high political status and was a mediator for the United Nations during several global crises. In 1950, he was the first Black person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. The two friends Ralph Bunche and Robert Stolz (who had left his homeland in the National Socialism era) felt strongly connected by their revulsion of racial segregation and by their wish for humanity's peaceful coexistance."UNO-Marsch" honors the important work of the United Nations and is a musical tribute to the larger goal of peace. The composition gained particular European popularity when the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Mariss Jansons opened their famous New Year's concert in 2016 with "UNO-Marsch".
