This march was composed during a Summer course, organized in the Youth Hostel 'Schnburg' on the occasion of the anniversary of the Tuba-player Erich Keller. It was also premiered over there, high in the mountains. It was sung (in four parts) by all the participants. This work can be played by a band, sung by a choir, or performed by the combination of both band and choir.

£38.20Swedish Cavalery March - Per Berg
Aggressive strains with blaring trumpets characterize the marches made by the Swedish composer Per Berg. He was director of music at the Royal Vsterbotten Regiment '30-'41 and at the Royal Sdermanland Regiment '41-'53. Four of his about 15 marches have become official marches in the Swedish Defence Forces. 'Hertigen av Vsterbotten is a cavalry march dedicated to the Prince Gustaf Adolf, the father of the present King Carl XVI Gustaf. In 1987 it was adopted as the common march past for the remaining Swedish cavalry units.

Sea shanties (or chanties) are songs sung by sailors to keep them synchronized (and mentally interested) while doing the hard labor of sailing. "Paddy Lay Back" is a capstan shanty, a capstan being a vertically-axled rotating machine used to raise and lower a ship's anchor. Sailors would rotate the capstan by pushing poles radiating from it, with three or four men working a pole. The song would help them keep momentum; if not, something could slip. Not only would the anchor drop uncontrolled, but the capstan would spin quickly and the poles could throw and harm the sailors. 1st trumpet's highest note is G. 1st & 2nd clarinets cross the break

Schiller's text of 1785 was partially used by Beethoven in1824 when he did finish the 4th movement of his 9th Symphony. The melody has later been used in very many contexts. As the anthem of the European Union, a lot of movies (A clockwork Orange, Die Hard, etc.), music to video games, as the anthem of Rhodesia, as rebel song in Chile and by FIFA. Therefore, it can be used in most settings This Young Band arrangement focuses on the main melody. In the original, the B part is repeated in each variation, but to get three variations (out of four), this repetition has been cut. The first variation should be played as soft as possible, but still with a nice sound. Crescendo to forte(f) and going back to pp should be as a surprise.

Oberhessische Bauerntnze - Ottmar Gerter
These four entertaining movements originated in the Thirties. They are an example of popular original compositions of high quality. The work was originally written for small orchestra. Norbert Studnitzky has arranged this series of dances for wind band and at the same time also retained longer chamber music pasages as in the original work.Thus here we have a work for wind band which on the one hand is suitable for developing a musical sense of humour in a playful way and which can also be performed on stage with a group of folk dancers. Ottmar Gerster studied in Frankfurt/main and then taught composition an several colleges of music in Leipzig. his music aims to be accesible to all listeners, even when he uses advanced composition techniques.

Carl Orff wrote his little world-theatre "Der Mond" [The Moon], based on old fables, between 1936 and 1938. The score written for actors who sing, a narrator and large orchestra, also contains parts important for wind band. Four scenes have been selected for the present arrangements which are best performed on different sets of instruments. The arranger, Hermann Regner (born 1928), worked very closely with Carl Orff for many years. This work is sure to be a success in concerts for bands at an advanced level.

In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, causedhim to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!

Charming Salzburg - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Salzburg, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, inspired Dutch composer Henk Hogestein to write this musical tribute. Mozart was born in this charming Austrian town in January 1756. He was a musical prodigy - at the age of four he began receiving lessons from his father Leopold and at the age of six he was composing smart minuets and other short pieces. The composition Charming Salzburg is based on a theme from Mozart's opera Die Zauberflte, which he completed in 1791.
