Tribute to a Maestro is an homage to Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683 1764), one of the most important French Baroque composers. Rameau was a hugely significant composer, organist, harpsichordist and music teacher: he also published several authoritative books on music theory. Jan de Haan based this tribute on a theme from 'Les Sauvages' (The Savages), the fourth act of Rameau's ballet-opera, Les Indes Galantes (The Amorous Indies). The work begins with two variations, whereupon the striking theme can be heard. After a short intermezzo, four more variations follow, of which the last one is composed in Baroque style.

Johan August Halvorsen (1864-1935) was born in Drammen and played violin and several brass instruments. He played in both orchestra and wind bands and in 1881 he became a student at Brigademusikken in Oslo. After a brilliant violinist career he proved himself talented as a conductor and composer. From 1899 he became conductor and composer at the National Theatre, where he wrote many of his most famous works. It was in this period in 1924 he wrote Fatum. Fatum means destiny and like Beethoven he opens the symphony with a motif he uses in all four movements. This work shows that Halvorsen was a great composer and a traditionalist.

St Paul's Suite, written for the school's string orchestra, was premiered there in 1913 and consists of four movements: an energetic Jig in 6/8 and 9/8, Ostinato, based on a simple 4-note theme, Intermezzo, an energetic and rhythmic dance and Finale, adapted from the Second Suite in F in which Holst brilliantly combines The Dargason and The English Dancing Master, with the traditional melody, Greensleeves.
