This piece was commissioned for the second edition of the "Suoni d'Aspromonte" National Competition which is held in Cittanova in the province of Reggio Calabria. The title, Oros, from the ancient Greek word for "mount", is a clear reference to the Greek culture that colonised Calabria and the magnificence of the Aspromonte massif that dominates the entire region: forests, towns and sea. The piece consists of three movements: Entrata, Serenata and Corteggio, offering rhythms and melodies that reflect present-day tastes rather than local musical traditions. It is specifically intended for bands with lots of young members.

Little Suite for Summer - Peter Schickele
These seven charming pieces were written by Mr. Schickele for his son's eight birthday, with the Primo part being easy enough for his son to play. The titles of the pieces were suggested by the music: CHA, CHA, CHA BOOMDEEAY because of the first movement's clangorous ending: NORTH STAR, with a hushed and lyrical melody inspired by the composer's stargazing: FOR CHARLIE THE PARROT, a vivid musical description of the imitative abilities of this bird: DUSK ON THE PALISADES, with its evocative ougmented chord textures: SORE IN THE SADDLE AGAIN, a delightful spoof of the well-known Western melody: GREASED LIGHTENING, with its flying runs and scales: and MINK HOLLOW MORNING,because of its gentle sostenuto lines and legato accompaniment figures-a musical description of a quiet and happy summer morning in the country. The Primo part is very easy, the Secondo is mostly easy medium. For studios, schools, some college & professional. Easy medium.

A musical depiction of the sense of mystery and wonder that one experiences while walking deep within the forest. The sky is blocked out by the thickness of the foliage and every shadow seems to have an ominous quality. In short, the forest seems to be alive with a somewhat dark, reserved personality. Silence seems more sinister as every little sound seems to be meaningful and important. The longer one stays, the faster one walks so as to not prolong ones presence "in the forest deep..."

We start our trip in Wallony, the French speaking part of Belgium where folk music is having a big revival nowadays. A solo cornet invites us with a classic opening as a little promenade to the dance, always accompanied by a tenor drum. Some instruments join but the cornet ends up alone. When the euphoniums present their more up tempo 'quasi Celtic jig' all groups dance together towards the end. Now and then syncopated counterrhytms occur in accompanying parts.The 1st theme is from the manuscript of Franois-Joseph Jamin (early 19th century).

£50.80Dance of the One-legged Sailor - Dick van Heuvel
The work describes a short dance by a one-legged sailor. In the 6/8 beat the sailor always makes the wrong steps and gets furious about it. So he stamps his wooden leg (sounded by beats on two large woodblocks) in anger on the floor. Yet he tries again and each time the theme changes a little bit. The two passages when the musicians blow air through their instruments (measures 44-45 and 63-64) represent the sailor's sighing. The 'Dance of the one-legged sailor' also offers several possibilities to bring this sailor on the stage during the performance of the composition.

Christmas in the Alps enchants people because of the very special atmosphere with a combination of attentive silence and the blue shining moonlight. At Christmas time, one can often hear in the distance a small group of wind players performing some old traditional carols in front of one or other little chapel in the mountains. This Christmas Carol medley by Willi Mrz reminds us of that tradition. He has arranged tunes from ancient Bavarian and Austrian Christmas Carols and shepherd songs. The religious 'Andachtsjodler' is still sung at Christmas time in the churches of Bavaria and Tyrol.

The march "Honour to the Veterans" was the composers third composition ever. He sent this march to Kjell Martinsen, who was the conductor of The Kings Guards Band in Norway. He liked the march so much that it was included on the CD which was releasedin connection with the bands 150 years anniversary.The march is not very difficult. There is a variety of melody lines in the march that differs from many other marches, especially the piccolo flute solo makes it a little bit special. Themarch is also playable for bands lacking a piccolo flute player, because the melody line in this part of the march is well taken care of.

The travels of the Aztec people as they headed south through North America looking for a new home, acted as the inspiration for Lake of the Moon. The composition contains small fragments of Oriental music and South American rhythms andoccasionally, Russian Cossacks seem to raise their heads. The journey from North to South is not without danger, which is represented by threatening sounds within the music. In the Adagio divoto the composer takes us along to the Texcoco Lake,which the Aztecs called the lake of the moon. Bring a little bit of South American history to your concert with Lake of the Moon.

£91.99Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers - Philip Sparke
This piece was inspired by the composer watching his young son, Benny, playing 'soldiers' with his collection of teddy bears - how appropriate!But it made him think of the many character pieces which take the form of a 'toy march', the most notable examples being by Haydn, Tchaikovsky and Leon Jessel. Parade of the Clockwork Soldiers is in the form of a 'patrol' (starting and ending quietly with a louder middle) and aims to represent a band marching past the listener. In fact, where the hall layout permits it, it could be possible to add a little choreography to the piece, starting and ending with only a few instruments on stage.
