Puff (The Magic Dragon) (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Lipton & Yarrow - Vannebo, Elisabeth

The music for Puff, the Magic Dragon was written by Peter Yarrow from the group Peter, Paul and Mary. The lyrics is based on a poem written in 1959 by Peter Yarrow, at that time a 19 year old student from the University of Cornell. It tells the story of the ageless dragon ?Puff? and his playmate. Jackie Paper, a little boy who grows up while loosing the childhoods imagined fairy tales, let Puff be with himself. The history about the song takes place at the lake in the fictional town of Honalee. The song became a hit with the group Yarrow through a recording released in January 1963.Duration: 2.15

O Little Town of Bethlehem (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brooks & Redner - Hannevik, John Philip

The text for this carol was written by the Episcopal priest Phillips Brooks in 1865, and it was inspired by his visit to Bethlehem three years earlier. He asked his organist in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Philadelphia, Lewis Redner, to write a tune to his poem. Lewis Redner himself later told that he found it hard to write a good tune for the text. But the night before the first performance "I was roused from sleep late in the night hearing an angel-strain whispering in my ear, and seizing a piece of music paper I jotted down the treble of the tune as we now have it, and on Sunday morning before going to church I filled in the harmony. Neither Mr. Brooks nor I ever thought the carol or the music to it would live beyond that Christmas of 1868." Duration: 2.20

The Cat's Pajamas (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - La Plante, Pierre

A Felicitous Feline Ragtime Novelty. During the Jazz age of the 1920's, "the cat's pajamas" referred to anything special, unique or "cool." Musically speaking, the image of a cat in pajamas might suggest combining low clarinets (reminiscent of Prokofiev's use of a clarinet to describe the cat in "Peter And The Wolf") with a jaunty little tune in ragtime style, adding a few instrumental "meows," and you have (what else?): "The Cat's Pajamas: A Felicitous Feline Ragtime Novelty!" Audiences and performers will love it from head to tail! Duration: 2.50

Send in the Clowns (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sondheim, Stephen - Johnsen, Richard

From A Little Night MusicSend in the Clowns is one of the most well known songs written by composer Stephen Sondheim. The ironic lyrics have a present-day meaning. It was recorded by the likes of Judy Collins, Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Between them all, they brought this song eternal fame. The Norwegian arranger, Richard Johnsen, who is very familiar with this musical repertoire, made this beautiful arrangement and kept it very close to the sound of the original version.Duration: 4.00

Call of the Valley (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off stage and a little march for brass and flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.Duration: 5:15

The Sun Will Rise Again (Concert Band - Score & Parts) - Sparke, Philip

The composer writes:On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan. I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title to honour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun. I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate. It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time.- Philip SparkeDuration: 4:30

The Loco-Motion (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Goffin & King - Miura, Hideaki

The Loco-motion was the hippest dance routine to hit the clubs in the 1960's. In contrast to many songwriters who write songs after a trend has taken off, singer/songwriter partners and couple Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote the song that kicked off the entire dance song craze. Little Eva was the first of several artists to reach the top of the US charts with this hit in 1962. Let your band rise to new heights with Hideaki Miura's funky arrangement!Duration: 3:45
