To A New Dawn was commissioned by the United States Continental Army Band - Captain Timothy J. Holtan, Commander and Conductor.The brief was for a piece to celebrate the 3rd Millennium and it was the composer's aim to provide a work which, as well as looking forward to the challenges of the new century, also contained moments of reflection about the last one.After a bright introduction featuring the trumpets a perky theme, passing quickly through several keys, appears on the woodwinds. A solo trumpet takes up a new theme over bubbling quavers (eighth notes) and this leads to a rhythmic figure on low clarinets, followed by the upper woodwinds. A brass interlude follows and, after a short bridge passage, an oboe takes up a contrasting legato tune that builds to a climax.An andante section follows with solos for horn and flugel horn (or trumpet) and a florid flute cadenza. A passionate climax leads back to the faster music and, eventually, to a full recapitulation, revisiting the earlier material before a lively coda close the work as it began.Duration: 9:40

Schubert's famous Ave Maria was originally titled Ellens dritter Gesang and was the sixth song in the Fr?ulein vom See song cycle (after The Lady of the Lake by Walter Scott). Later the Latin prayer Ave Maria was set to the melody, creating one of his most well-known sacred songs ever. In this arrangement the melody line can be played by either a solo trumpet or by the entire trumpet section. The piece opens with a vibrant flourish of woodwinds and percussion that immediately leads into the pensive yet driving main theme. The contrasting middle section pulls back to a reflective and mysterious solo for recorder (or optional flute), accompanied by exotic percussion instruments. A rich slower middle section leads into the return of celebration. This piece is included on several lists of recommended festival and contest literature. Mass of the Children represents something new in the composer's work insofar as it was conceived with an integral role for a children's choir alongside an adult mixed choir, two soloists, and orchestra (now band). The role of the children's choir is to add a further dimension to the traditional Latin Mass sung by the adult choir, sometimes commenting, sometimes amplifying the meaning and mood. His musical understanding, sense of melody, harmony and orchestration are oftentimes fully capable of telling the story even without the text. In the setting for band alone, the children's choir part is generally set for solo trumpet.
